About this listen

In the town of Shorter, Missouri, lives are turning - like the big blades of the helicopter visiting the town for a summer festival - some slowly rising, others spinning toward the ground. Look closely at these people - the mysteries and coded messages of life are in the details and the mundane, in small decisions and hidden events.

Here are nine stories of lives on that single day - a former baseball star who comes back to lead the parade, a woman who drifts between dementia and magic, a local musician who may have played his final gig, a DJ who tries to come home but has trouble finding the way, a college girl anxious to leave her roots. Snapshots of lives, all turning, changing, happening - on Whirlybird Day.

Bob Walkenhorst is one of the most underrated songwriters around. Check out his body of work, and you will find the albums full of clever lyrics and melodies. This collection of prose is no different. The stories have a cadence and rhythm to them, and centering the whole collection around a single event, gives it the feeling of a literary concept album.
You really do not need to be American to appreciate this insight into small town America; every kind of character one would expect to find is there - the excitable boy, the returning hero, those who have never left the town and so on. There is an element of the autobiographical about some of the events too.
If you love Bob's music, check out the book, and if you love the book, check out the music!
