About this listen

An award-winning literary author enters the world of magical realism with her World Fantasy Award-winning novel of a remarkable woman in post-apocalyptic Africa.

Now optioned as a TV series for HBO, with executive producer George R.R. Martin!

In a post-apocalyptic Africa, the world has changed in many ways; yet in one region genocide between tribes still bloodies the land. A woman who has survived the annihilation of her village and a terrible rape by an enemy general wanders into the desert, hoping to die. Instead, she gives birth to an angry baby girl with hair and skin the colour of sand. Gripped by the certainty that her daughter is different – special – she names her Onyesonwu, which means ‘Who fears death?’ in an ancient language.

It doesn't take long for Onye to understand that she is physically and socially marked by the circumstances of her conception. She is Ewu – a child of rape who is expected to live a life of violence, a half-breed rejected by her community. But Onye is not the average Ewu. Even as a child, she manifests the beginnings of a remarkable and unique magic. As she grows, so do her abilities, and during an inadvertent visit to the spirit realm, she learns something terrifying: someone powerful is trying to kill her.

Desperate to elude her would-be murderer and to understand her own nature, she embarks on a journey in which she grapples with nature, tradition, history, true love, and the spiritual mysteries of her culture, and ultimately learns why she was given the name she bears: Who Fears Death.

I enjoyed the performance.
I was introduced to the world of Nuru and Okeke in her collection of short stories and I was pleased to get more meat the bones of that premise.

This novel is everything you've been looking for. it tears apart your soul and puts it back together again too many times to count.

An Exhilarating Experience

this has all the makings of an excellent HBO series but this is both a strength and weakness. the book really is epic: I particularly enjoyed the first 2 parts but much of the last part was like that of lord of the rings - I felt battle weary! an exciting finale however with a useful open ending. nearly gave up after 10 hours but glad I stuck with it.

an epic tale

An absolute must listen! You might be thinking yeah but it's long... Honestly, I didn't even notice the time passing and I straight away downloaded the prequel

Amazing!!!

After all the build up in Part 1 of the book, the ending felt rushed. The epic meeting up of the girl & her father was lackluster. Great performance by the narrator though.

Underwhelming ending

This book is unlike any other I have read. I struggle to even assign it a genre. The realism of this book coupled with the spiritualism combines to make something special. The narrator as always is flawless in her delivery. Special.

A profoundly moving and magical book

Brilliant Fantasy/Sci-fi crossover story with a strong (but not patronising) female protagonist. Wonderful writing and beautiful imagery. However, beware - there are very graphic descriptions of rape and violence.
Narration was excellent. Highly recommend as an audio book!

Fantastic story and narration

I loved the concept and this was well read. It is also well written clearly. The action moments were brilliantly done - this will be great if it ever nakes it to TV or movie. That said there were definitely moments where I struggled to finish the book and am not sure if that was the length, number of characters, etc. Either way, still a good Afrofuturistic book!

Enjoyed the narration but struggled with the story
