About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A much loved classic of nature writing from environmentalist and the author of Waterlog, Roger Deakin, Wildwood is an exploration of the element wood in nature, our culture and our lives.

From the walnut tree at his Suffolk home, he embarks upon a quest that takes him through Britain, across Europe, to Central Asia and Australia, in search of what lies behind man's profound and enduring connection with wood and trees.

Meeting woodlanders of all kinds, he lives in shacks and cabins, travels in search of the wild apple groves of Kazakhstan, goes coppicing in Suffolk, swims beneath the walnut trees of the Haut-Languedoc and hunts bush plums with Aboriginal women in the outback.

Perfect for fans of Robert Macfarlane and Colin Tudge, Roger Deakin's unmatched exploration of our relationship with trees is autobiography, history, traveller's tale and incisive work in natural history. It will take you into the heart of the woods, where we go 'to grow, learn and change'.

as I began listening I thought the book was a bit long on facts and slightly lacking in the story and travel elements of waterlog that links them all together, as I listened on this became less the case and that same spirit of Deakin came through especially in his travels around Europe as always Roy MacMillan gives a great performance as narrator.

a slow burner but amazing story

A joyful experience

Such wonderful prose, almost poetry at times. The great affection the author has for trees radiates from every sentence, and while I couldn’t comprehend everything (I’m not a native), it stimulated me to move on. The language is marvellous, and adds to the richness of the narrative, although the narrative itself was full of poetry at times too. I particularly enjoyed the description of his meetings with endogenous people abroad. The reading was wonderful too, although a bit fast for me sometimes. I ended up reading it at 0.9 times the original speed. That is a handy feature from Audible I must confess.

Wonderfully poetic
