About this listen

An Amazon Charts, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today best seller

She can’t ignore a cry for help. But in this remote hunting town, it’s open season.

Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.

But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead - her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.

But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide....

Book 3 in the Stillhouse Lake series. In this one we see Gwen recieve two phone calls that pull her into a murder investigation in the small town of Wolfhunter, alongside Sam, Lenny & Connor they are unwittingly dragged into circumstances that put them all in danger whilst trying to help clear the name of a 15yo girl. This town has it out for all of them and Gwens past continues to present dangers and problems for her and the kids.

This is a bridging the gap book from the central events of books 1&2 and the new direction the rest of the series is going to take wherein Gwen is going to become a Private Investigator. I found the first 40% a bit slow going as it was laying the groundwork but after that the story picked up the pace and the themes of cyber stalking and the court of public opinion were once again present.

Overall an enjoyable read even if none of the major revelations came as a surprise to me, once again my pattern recognition strikes again, but I found the story engaging and entertaining with a good amount of action in the second half of the book. Like I said above this is clearly a bridge/filler to get Gwens character where she needs to be for the subsequent books and it does that job well. I'm looking forward to seeing what book 4 will be like and hopefully some of the repetitive themes surrounding Gwens ex etc won't be as prevelant going forward now Gwen's character will be taking on an investigative roll... but I guess we will see.

The third in the Stillhouse Lake series and another chance to see Gwen battle the demons of her serial killer ex-husband. This book was just OK, but didn’t excite me as the previous two had.I felt the story was missing tension and instead seemed to amble quite nicely to the end when I wanted more action and pace. The fourth book of the series is due for release in January 2020.

An OK drama

enjoyed the continuation of Gwen's story. only thought is that it is hard to imagine anyone, let alone kids, going through such constant stress

very engaging, good characters

Wolfhunter River is the best in the Stillhouse Lake series so far. It had some tense moments that were made all the more vivid by Rachel Caine's knack for character-building. If you're still listening by this point, you'll know that the narrators are fantastic and that the characters in the series are perfectly drawn. But what sets Wolfhunter River slightly above its predecessors is that it contains some genuinely nail-biting moments and a satisfying climax. While I feel Rachel Caine lacks the ability to set up any real surprises or "wow" moments, she is unparalleled in writing three-dimensional, flawed, wonderful characters.

If you enjoyed the first two in the series, you'll love this one - and, like me, you'll be looking forward to the next.

More of the same, but in a very good way

I enjoyed the first 2 novels in this series however didn't think this had as much depth to it. While I understand the characters are who they are because of their past, I felt that there was far too much repetition in this story of events from the previous 2 books, particularly as it is clearly aimed at an audience who have read the first two and are familiar with what has gone on before. The new plot in this story seems to only kick in around half way and then is pretty rushed. It could have been better if the wolfhunter storyline started earlier, had more detail, and was the main focus.

Bit disappointing

Having read the previous 2 books it was compulsory for me to read this one as well. I did enjoy the story however I would be inclined to say that it was not as strong and the previous 2, or is because I am now used to the characters and the theme of the stories. It is still worth reading, especially if you have completed the first 2

Enjoyable

Another action packed amateur crime sleuth thriller. Not as good as the first 2 for me. I will try the next one in the series.

The shine is starting to fade for me

I'm exhausted after completing this. Action packed didn't even come close.

A very well presented performance helped add to the excitement. Still hoping Gwen catches a break over if these days.
