About this listen

From the bestselling author of the hugely popular thrillers Things We Do in the Dark, Little Secrets, and Jar of Hearts comes Wonderland, a roller coaster of a listen. Now in audio for the first time!

After a personal tragedy and professional scandal forces homicide detective Vanessa Castro out of Seattle, she takes a new job in Seaside, Washington, determined to make a fresh start for herself and her family. The small beach town, best known for its popular amusement park, Wonderland, seems like the perfect place to raise her young son and teenage daughter.

But it's not that easy starting over, especially as the town's new Deputy Chief of Police. When a dead body turns up at the park her first day on the job, and then a teenage Wonder Worker goes missing, Vanessa's investigation is met with resistance. After all, Wonderland is the largest amusement park in the Pacific Northwest, attracting tourists from all over the country and providing thousands of jobs for the locals. A scandal that hurts the park hurts the town, but the more questions Vanessa asks, the more questions arise . . . especially when she learns that the missing teenage boy is the not the first park employee to disappear. The deeper she goes, the more she begins to suspect that the terrifying rumors about Wonderland's dark past might actually be true.

Surrounded by secrets, lies, and corruption at the highest levels, Vanessa's family is now in the center of a serial killer's twisted game . . . and there's nobody she can trust but herself.

Gripping from start to finish

Okay I'm officially a big Jennifer Hillier fan! This was my second listen after Jar Of Hearts and both have had me gripped! Hillier is very clever at leaving you in suspense, just when you think you've figured it out, there's a twist! Please Audible, offer more from her series!

Truly terrible

It takes a lot for me to bother leaving a negative review but this book was awful! About half way through I realised that I was going to have to suspend my disbelief pretty hard; it was really unrealistic but I was okay with that, I told myself it was a silly, easy listen that wouldn’t take up too much brain-power. But by the end though I really disliked it. Any semblance of reality went out the window. Seasoned police chiefs were leaving their passwords on sticky notes, random friends were allowed to roam the halls of police stations and sit in on interviews. It was just ridiculous.

In addition to this, there is one detail in the story which just doesn’t sit right with me. Toward the end of the book, a random inconsequential character is transgender, seemingly for no reason other than to disparage them. It was so weird, I kept thinking that their transition would somehow prove to be important later in the story. But no, the writer just pointed out that a trans character had a masculine physique and looked strange wearing makeup and this had absolutely nothing to do with the story. It felt really uncomfortable and I couldn’t understand why the author included it.

The narrator was okay and did a reasonably good job distinguishing between the different character voices.

As you can probably guess, I don’t recommend this book.
