About this listen

Visceral, disturbing and chilling in its realism, World War Z is perhaps the most famous work from the world's foremost expert on our undead counterparts. Paired with the equally gripping The Zombie Survival Guide, there is no better preparation for the inevitable uprising.

"The end was near." Voices from the Zombie War.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Loved it! It was a blast listening to this! I got sucked in the story at the first page. This won't be the last time I will read World War: Z!

Riveting listen

An enjoyable listen even though some of the accents were a bit dodgy. Well worth listening to and very different compared to the movie.

Book > Movie

So much better than the movie, has such a depth and spirit to it. You really feel as if this could have happened and this is how people would have reacted.

Fast moving and engaging

I was a bit dubious about this book at the beginning, but that soon went away. Every chapter has a different narrator so it never gets boring and the listener is always engaged some chapters are a bit slow but the others more than make up for it and it all seems to fall into place.

Terrific zombie fiction

Would you listen to World War Z again? Why?
The diversity within this book is brilliant. One chapter you're following the recount of a pilot who crashed in zombie country, next you're listening to a blind man's exploits as he survives in the Japanese mountains.

What did you like best about this story?
The interview layout was unlike a lot of books I've read before, and in this context it works really well; I can't imagine the story being improved if it were to be written as third or first-person prose.

What aspect of the narrators’s performance might you have changed?
Some of the accents were a bit dodgy, a bit over the top, probably offensive to some; I would have understood where these specific characters were from without needing constant reminders. The lower quality performances are balanced out by the good ones, however, so don't let this stop you from listening to this thoroughly enjoyable book.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The blind man's story is saddening, both in his circumstances and his fears about how people would treat him. The panic of the zombie outbreak is well imagined, in spite of the fact it is all shown through retrospective thoughts voiced by the characters.

Any additional comments?
If you're into anything zombie-related, this is a must. If you enjoyed the film, you'll probably enjoy this audiobook. If you didn't, don't feel discouraged to download the audiobook; the only thing this book really seems to have in common with the film is the name.

This is a real life zombie story.

If you could sum up World War Z in three words, what would they be?

Realistic, breathtaking, frightening.

What other book might you compare World War Z to, and why?

I would compare it to a biography more than anything, it made me think for a second that this was a retelling of past events.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The explanation of 'The Great Panic' and how humans reacted to the zombie uprising.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It was a book that I couldnt stop listening to, it was a breath of fresh air from the stereotype zombie books where everything falls apart and mankind is spread incredibly thin. This was more of a how and why humans dealt with the zombie uprising.
