يروي مروان كنفاني‏، المستشار السياسي والمتحدث باسم الرئيس الراحل ياسر عرفات على مدى عشرين عاما‏،‏ والقريب من دوائر صنع القرار الفلسطيني، في كتابه‏ هذا‏ المحنة الجديدة للشعب الفلسطيني بعد أن استعرض بتفصيل مؤثر كل ما تعرض له الشعب الفلسطيني من مؤمرات ومآس على يد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي والقوى الدولية الداعمة له.

يبدأ كنفاني كتابه بالسرد التقليدي الجامد لمأساة الشعب الفلسطيني عام 1948 برواية قصة خروج عائلته في طريق هجرة مؤلمة حملتهم من مدينة يافا إلى عكا ومنها إلى صور وقرى جنوب لبنان حيث توزعت الأسرة في بيروت ودمشق والخليج العربي ومن ثم مختلف بقاع الأرض.

ويحتوي الكتاب على ستة أجزاء ينقسم كل منها إلى عدة فصول، في تسلسل تاريخي متصل، ما عدا الجزء الأول الذي يتعاطى مباشرة مع وفاة الرئيس ياسر عرفات، ورحلته الطويلة التي أخذته من مصر إلى الكويت إلى الأردن ولبنان وتونس ثم إلى الأراضي الفلسطينية ثم رحلته المرضية الأخيرة إلى فرنسا.

كما يروي الكتاب الظروف التي حتّمت قرارات الرئيس ياسر عرفات السياسية المصيرية، والأسباب التي دفعته لقبول عملية السلام، ويتطرق بإسهاب إلى مرحلة ما بعد الرئيس عرفات ويخلص، في خاتمته إلى الظروف الحالية وتوقعات المستقبل المنظور.
