Summary

As the sun blazes over the Caribbean island of Lagrimas Negras, its bloodthirsty ruler is watching and waiting. Criminals come here to hide, with blood on their hands and escape on their minds. On the mainland, ex-flying ace Jack Stone leaves his son and daughter in the company of James Bond. But a gang of thieves waits in ambush. They want Stone's precious safe, and will kill for its contents. A deadly chase through the Mexican jungle begins and on this terrifying trail of greed and betrayal, only danger is guaranteed. Survival is not... This is the fourth explosive Young Bond bestseller from Charlie Higson.

Amazing, great read for young people

I would highly recommend this audiobook because the narrator voices all of the characters voices perfectly!

Brilliant book

Another fab book - so tense at times - my dog walks go on and on so I can keep listening! - characters come to life in my ears.

Never a dull moment!

What made the experience of listening to Young Bond: Hurricane Gold the most enjoyable?

The plot comes thick and fast, never time to catch your breath. We usually listen in the car, but had to finish this one back in the house as we couldn't wait. The whole family enjoyed it and a long journey flew by.

What did you like best about this story?

The setting is exotic, far away from Eton, and originally I thought we'd miss some of the characters, but there wasn't time to.

What about Nathaniel Parker’s performance did you like?

Nathaniel Parker has a great voice, love his performance because you never notice it as a "performance". None of the voices jar, so you can just get lost in the story.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Hurricane Gold - a gold plated plot

Good narration of a disappointing book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I wouldn't, no. I would recommend the first few Young Bond books, I found those positively thrilling and exceptionally clever. This one however was quite the disappointment. There isn't such a clever story and it seems to resort to graphic and gratuitous violence to prop itself up.

Would you ever listen to anything by Charlie Higson again?

Yes I would give more Charlie Higson novels a go. Like I said before, his other Young Bond books were good. I have tried his zombie series but that isn't really my thing. I intend to give his next Young Bond book, By Royal Command, a go (I have it from the library) but if it's as violent as this one was then I can't see that I'll finish it. Double or Die has definitely been the high point of these YB books.

What about Nathaniel Parker’s performance did you like?

Nathaniel Parker is AMAZING. He does so many voices and he flips between them quickly and effortlessly. Absolutely top notch.

Escapology at its finest

Hurricane gold filled me with both dread and excitement throughout. When bond became the hero once again I almost wanted to laugh at his childish pride. The story slightly patchy in parts but still great.

Darker, more violent and less 'realistic' than previous ones

This series has distinguished itself by a level of plausibility (if not realism) but this book has firstly more graphic violence and sustained threat and also more of the illogical impetuosity that characterised the Alex Rider series.
That said the story remains strong, the allusions to the later Bonds are well played and the reading is exemplary. Still recommended but not the best.

Great sequel!

All the books from the "Young Bond" series have been really enjoyable! I've had so much fun listening to them, despite the fact that I am well out of the target age group. Yet, these books seem to have something for all ages, so no matter how old you are, give them a try and you won't be disappointed. Plenty of action, turns and twists in the story. I hope there will be at least several more in this series, because they are well worth a listen.
