About this listen

Zinzi December has a Sloth on her back, a dirty 419 scam habit, and a talent for finding lost things. But when a little old lady turns up dead and the cops confiscate her last paycheck, she’s forced to take on her least favourite kind of job: missing persons.

Very unique

Such an interesting concept, beautifully realised with excellent characters.

Too many good bits it is impossible to pick just one.

Excellently read, the performance adds extra brilliance.

Sarcastic and cynical fun

A self-aware detective story set by slums and gated communities, whose mysterious investigator is always looking at the angles. Although written by a white South African, the research shows, and very few characters are stale or predictable. Looking forward to future works by Beukes

Voice Over

The voice over is not authentically South African so this makes for jarring listening.

Neil Gaiman with sex, drugs and swearing.

Great world, very well written with believable characters. wasn't too keen on the author to begin with but she grew on me. Definitely worth a listen if you're a Neil Gaiman fan.

An interesting take on carrying your crimes with you

I was given the book by my brother for Christmas and liked it so much that I had to get the audio as well. Fabulous story Brilliantly performed by Justine Eyre. Took me back to Jo’burg, evocative portrayal of life in South Africa. Each character perfectly drawn and what a great portrayal of having a personal daemon in the form of an animal which is the embodiment of your guilt. Loved it. I wouldn’t mind reading more adventures with Zinzi December.

Disappointing!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I had heard a lot of good things about this book. Awards had been numerous? But I was bored. The basic premise was promising, with the "daemons" representing sins but it was so wasted and descended into a very basic, though dull, thriller /detective story. i could understand if it was the first in a trilogy but I felt as if it didn't really go anywhere.

What will your next listen be?

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Nope

Did Zoo City inspire you to do anything?

Find something better

Any additional comments?

I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone else. Look elsewhere before spending your precious credits.

Make it stop!

Oh my giddy aunt, who in their infinite wisdom, chose the narrator for this fine novel. I have never wanted someone to shut up quite as much. I love Ms. Beukes' writing but the reader ruined this experience for me.
