About this listen

George Hart just wants to serve his Queen and honour his family. It's not that simple.

Bastard - He doesn't know his father, only that he's a pillar of the Establishment. His beloved mother is half Irish, half Zulu.

Zulu: In a Victorian society rife with racism and prejudice, George's dark skin spells trouble to his regimental commander.

Warrior: But George has soldiering in his blood - the only question is what he's really fighting for: ancestry or Empire. In the heat of battle he must decide....

Saul David captures the imagination mixing facts with a great story line. Jonathan Keebles ability to change accent is top notch.

I am not really a military book person. But this was outstanding. Saul David is an exceptional writer. His detailed descriptions and way with words had me gripping the edge of my seat.

Outstanding read.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are well written and the story is fast moving, colourful and gripping, The historical background of the Zulu wars brings the fiction to life. The ending begs for a sequel, mysteries have yet to be solved. The narrator, Jonathan Keeble, is a master of regional accents, adding to the depth of the tale. Brilliant.

Saul David is a legend when it comes to writing history books. I have read most of his book and always found them super well written and incredibly interesting.

This book has all the makings of been an epic. It's incredible well narrated and is gripping. However the main character keeps making the most annoying mistakes and does not seem to learn from them. Towards the end of the book you just get annoyed with him and sadly I found it just started to make me dislike the book.

However I'm sure the next one written will be great.

Very detailed and exciting

Overall not a bad story, drawing as it does from history, and casting a new perspective as seen through the eyes of the hero, Hart. It is well told and narrated and the pace is good.

However, it really should be subtitled, 'Part 1' because the story in the book ends in mid air. What happens to Hart in his challenge? Where is Part 2 which would explain? Because of this, the novel is rather frustrating and diminishes the whole.

Where is Part 2?

The set up to this book along with the building of the main character are fantastic, you really get exited for the journey he is undertaking and are right there with him though ups and downs. However about halfway though this all goes away, new characters introduced are forgettable and the plot losses itself. Good battle scenes and obviously a first rate historian but let down slightly by the storytelling.

Great start and premise, let down by second half

Saul David had written quite a good book about the Zulu wars .....unfortunately this is not it.
Mr David has taken as the inspiration for his book two sources, the collected works of Bernard Cornwell and an anthology of the Victorian penny dreadful. Trite hackneyed plot, a succession of superiors out to get him ....and a plethora of one dimensional characters ....this book has them all.
Some have mentioned this work in the same breath as the name of George MacDonald Fraser and his Flashman novels ....in your dreams Mr David ...in your dreams.
On the up side however the narrator does a very good job and I hope to hear more of him ....and that next time he is given a better book to read.

A penny dreadful
