 【解説】札幌に住んでいた私の家に、少年の君が来て自分の絵を見てもらいたいと言った。それは、手荒ながら不思議な迫力で迫ってくるものだった。君は「もっといいものを描いてまた来ます」と言って帰っていき、それから音信が途絶えて10年がたった。ある朝君から、突然、魚臭い油紙に包まれたスケッチが届けられた。それは芸術家のみが描く事ができる、北海道の深刻な自然の肖像画だった。
久しぶりに会う君は、少年時代の面影などどこにもなかった。君はあれから、苦しい漁家の家業を支えるために東京での学業を断念し、岩内の実家で漁夫として厳しい労働に没頭してきたのだった。昼夜を問わないつらい労働の中、遭難もし、自殺もしかけたが、絵画への欲求は途絶えることはなかったという。君がどうしてそのような苦労を負わなければならないのか、と思う。しかし、この生きている地球の胸の中に隠れて生まれ出ようとするものの悩み――それを僕はしみじみと君によって感ずる事ができるのだ。
