• Bonus 5. Transformed by Forgiveness
    Nov 12 2024

At the heart of the Lord's Prayer there is a call to forgiveness. If you learn how to truly forgive, it can transform your relationships. This is not an easy thing to learn, but Jesus teaches that it is absolutely essential for everyone who follows him.

I was honored to preach this sermon at the Kwajalein chapel on Nov. 10th, 2024.

  • 28. Creation: Myths, Meaning, and Reality
    Nov 8 2024

Why do the opening chapters of Genesis sound so strange to us? And are there other ancient cultures that produced similar creation narratives around the same time as Moses was composing Genesis?

Well, it turns out the answer to that question is both "yes" and "no." Many of the cultures surrounding ancient Israel did in fact generate creation stories which bear some striking similarities to Genesis 1-2, but the differences between Genesis and those other narratives are even more striking! This juxtaposition of a similar sounding story with a strikingly dissimilar view of God and nature seems to suggest that the opening chapters of Genesis were written specifically to attack many of the myths the ancient Israelites may have heard from other cultures: so that the Israelites would know there is one true God, and that "you shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below."

  • 27. Creation: Evidence For and Against Evolution
    Oct 29 2024

Is there any good evidence to support evolutionary theory? This week we look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of the key evidence and the scientific culture surrounding evolutionary theory. This includes digging into blind cave fish, fossil digs near the north pole, ancient whales with pelvis bones, DNA, animal eyes, the movement of bacteria.

It's another wild week on the podcast, so grab a coffee and dive in!

  • 26. Creation: What Exactly Is Evolution?
    Oct 19 2024

Why is the scientific community so convinced that the origin of the tremendous variety of species we see is evolution by natural selection? And have Christians always been opposed to this idea?

This week, we look at the evidence concerning the age of the Earth and the specific ideas presented by Charles Darwin in On the Origin of Species.

  • Bonus 4. Let's Talk About Politics and Religion
    Sep 18 2024

You know what topics really bring people together? Politics and religion! So let's talk about them for a bit.

I am once again joined by my lovely wife for a conversation about some of the basics of our political beliefs and what we think Scripture has to say about how Christians relate to the government.

  • 25. Creation: Do Miracles Muck with Science?
    Sep 11 2024

Was your great-great-great....-great-great-grandpa a cyanobacteria? Some Christians argue that was the case while still believing that Genesis 1 provides and accurate account of God creating the universe. How can that be?!

This week, we look at the concept of theistic evolution. We begin by considering the possibility that God truly did create everything that exists in six, twenty-four hour days and some of the philosophical concerns that come along with that. Then we consider some of the scriptural issues with affirming that God created by a process of evolution.

Regardless of where we land on the specifics of creation, we always affirm our trust in God and his word regardless of whether or not we understand everything about what it says.

  • 24. Creation: How Does Science Work?
    Sep 4 2024

Early in the 17th century, there was an intense conflict between the Catholic Church, which was teaching a geocentric model of the universe, and Galileo Galilei, who was espousing a heliocentric model. This conflict caused theologians worldwide to re-examine the Scriptures and realize that a geocentric view of the universe really wasn't taught by God's word (in fact, they had inherited that view from Aristotle, the ancient Greek philosopher). To what degree is that dialog between science and Scripture allowed?

To answer that question, we first need to understand what science really is and how it works. Welcome to this week's episode on the philosophical underpinnings and inherent limitations of modern science. This is what you get when you tune into a theology podcast taught by an astrophysics PhD...

Oh, and we do a short overview of Canaanite religion and how modern science philosophically parallels that ancient religion. Oh dear, quick, there's still time to switch to something else before the nerdiness-level reaches critical mass!

  • 23. Creation: The Heavens Are Telling the Glory of God!
    Aug 28 2024

Since sin has entered the world, it is still good? Should we enjoy created things like good food and pleasant experiences, or does that distract our attention from God? According to the Bible, as long as we give thanks to God, all of creation is still good and gives him glory!

We also start to dig into and discuss the specifics of the interface between science and Scripture. First up: does the Bible actually say anything scientific, or does it just deal with theological information?
