Dr. Rupert Whitaker is a remarkable individual who has shown extraordinary resilience as one of the longest survivors of HIV. He has been a strong advocate for people with HIV and other long-term illnesses for over 40 years.
Disability, mental illness, and age-related issues persist for many living with HIV, despite medication advances. Dr. Whitaker believes that the LGBTQ+ community should take action to improve support and healthcare for those in need, emphasising that it should focus on the long-term effects of HIV on mental and physical health, including housing and care for older people.
He helped start the Terrence Higgins Trust to honor his late partner and is now an expert in mental health and public health. In 2021, he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree for his medical work and patient advocacy. In 2022, he was given an OBE for his charity work and public health service.
