Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree - First Look

  • Summary

  • Journey Anew: Exploring the Shadows of Elden Ring Wake up, Tarnished. The call of adventure beckons once more. Soon we shall return to the Lands Between, that mystical realm of danger and discovery first introduced in Elden Ring. New lands to traverse, new foes to conquer, and new mysteries to unravel await in the upcoming expansion - Shadow of the Erdtree. It has been a year since Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware unleashed Elden Ring upon the world, revolutionizing open-world gameplay through their signature brand of tense combat woven into a fragmented story landscape. Now in 2023, appetites whetted by the base game's secrets, fans eagerly anticipate what lies around the next fog-veiled corner. Of course, precious little is yet known about what Shadow of the Erdtree will contain, beyond cryptic glimpses in the initial teaser trailer. Master storytellers like Miyazaki prefer to show rather than tell. But observant eyes have found hints that Miquella, the cursed child of Radagon and twin of Malenia, may serve as our central antagonist this time. What fate has befallen the eternal youth? Why does a sinister cocoon swaddle his form? All shall be revealed on June 21st when we can again walk the realm between life and death. Until then, anticipation runs high for where our next odyssey will take us. The Lands Between as presented in Elden Ring already represented Miyazaki's most expansive and multilayered vision - a vast interconnected mythos centered on the shattered Elden Ring and the mad demigods who each grasped for a shard of its power. Many hours were lost simply wandering its misty plains, stumbling upon new zones and characters around each bend. If Elden Ring was but the base of the iceberg, Shadow of the Erdtree may unveil the hidden depths. Of course, we must temper wild speculation and enter this new chapter with fresh eyes. As with any FromSoftware release, attempts to pin down details ahead of time mostly chase phantoms. Part of the mystique lies in letting their worlds gradually engulf you, piecing together obscure hints and unsettling imagery until you recognize the laborious tapestry in its entirety. Elden Ring positively reveled in obscure story beats and optional encounters that could easily be missed. We must resist the temptation to preemptively connect each dot and instead let Miyazaki's vision transport us organically. In truth, the sheer scope of Elden Ring makes its world feel far bigger. The expansive map spanning grandiose castles, misty forests, and terrifying catacombs offers near-limitless adventure possibilities. One could delve into its secrets for ages and barely scratch the surface. This is precisely what brings such feverish anticipation for the new environments and characters promised in Shadow of the Erdtree. Just as we had adjusted to the enormity of the Lands Between, an entire undiscovered country awaits. Of course, the DLC will likely bring more than just new geography and lore to uncover. Expanding and refining Elden Ring's already stellar combat will surely be a priority. We can expect new enemy patterns to master, deadly new boss encounters that test our reflexes, and further build variety through new skills and spells. If we are indeed to face members of the divine Carian royal family, perhaps more intricate implementations of sorceries will be showcased. And what new nightmarish Sinisteers might appear from the stones themselves? The possibilities to heighten Elden Ring’s refined action leave the mind racing. Equally enticing are the prospects of further developed multiplayer integration. Elden Ring's asynchronous online features like ghostly messages and spectral summoning signs added rich layers of anonymous community to an otherwise bleak realm. We can hope to see expanded cooperative and competitive extensions, carving out dedicated PvP spaces or enabling new modes of jolly cooperation against harrowing shared challenges. A land shrouded in darkness seems ripe for both bright cooperation and sinister invasions. Of course, many questions still swirl regarding what Shadow of the Erdtree may unveil, but arguably that sense of mystery is equally exciting. The opaque nature of FromSoftware's storytelling invites active interpretation and drives fervent fan speculation. Room for theories and hidden meanings makes their worlds feel truly alive. We need not fret about grasping every detail ahead of time. The point is embracing the journey of discovery from moment to moment. Elden Ring's vibrant legacy is precisely why our impending return feels so monumental. When it was first released, neither fans nor critics could have predicted how thoroughly it would dominate discussion. Even a year later, "Let me solo her" lives on as an immortal meme. Melania's Waterfowl Dance still haunts the dreams of bladebearers worldwide. The triumph of wiping out Margit for the first time, or stumbling into Liurnia's moonlit vistas, or hearing the Thorns of Old for the first time ...
