  • Summary

  • Childbirth is a crucial moment, but every labour has a deep history behind it – one that takes us back centuries. Forgetting all that has come before can sometimes be life-threatening. Ivan pieces together the stories of women whose past, present and future were overlooked in the delivery room.

Interesting but flawed.

Some parts of this are truly shocking , especially the first chapter, but as the book goes on and looks at individual stories in many cases I felt the issues were nothing to do with race. For example the womans story of her experience accessing counselling was a far better one than mine as a white man. I also felt there were many contradictions in the books message, often in the same sentence, we want to be treated the same, we want to be treated differently! However, it is definitely worth a listen. Similar to when I read, 'Why I'm no longer talking to white people about race...' there were times I really learned something about other peoples experiences, but other times were I profoundly disagreed with tge author. Listen and make your own mind up!
