About this listen

What Rights? is a podcast that explores how borders, laws, and politics shape—and often deny—the rights of individuals in Italy, the UK, and beyond.

Hosted by Pierluisa Maligno, a social scientist and activist living between nations, this show dives into citizenship, migration, justice, and democracy with a critical yet personal lens.

From referendums in Italy to the UK's immigration white papers, each episode tackles legal and political questions that affect real lives.

The first episode of What Rights starts from home: Italy.

We discuss the referendum of 8 and 9 June, focusing on fundamental issues such as the right to work and citizenship — and how the government is attempting to undermine its success, exploiting the quorum and media silence.

This is not just an Italian problem but a textbook case of how rights are circumvented, neutralized or emptied with the very tools of democracy.

If you are interested in understanding what is really happening and why you should care, you are in the right place.

🎓 With a background in Social Sciences, I decided to combine academic skills and critical spirit to offer a deeper (and often uncomfortable) reading of what is happening in the world.

🎧 What Rights – because every right begins with an uncomfortable question.
