About this listen

On June 24, 1973, a deadly fire tore through the UpStairs Lounge, a popular gay bar in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The blaze claimed the lives of 32 people, making it the deadliest attack on the LGBTQ+ community in U.S. history—until the Pulse nightclub shooting more than four decades later.

But while Pulse brought national mourning and support, the UpStairs Lounge fire was met with silence, shame, and abandonment. Churches refused to hold funerals. Families disowned victims. And to this day, the arsonist has never been officially identified.

In this episode, we revisit that horrific night, the community it devastated, and the ongoing fight to ensure those who died are not forgotten.
