La giovane Margaret D. non aveva conosciuto sua madre, morta subito dopo il parto ed era cresciuta con il padre che l'aveva allevata con granse senso di responsabilità ma scarso affetto.
Sulla reputazione della famiglia gravava un'ombra da quando lo zio Arthur Tyrrell era stato sospettato di omicidio.
