  • Edu Gaspar’s Departure - What It Means for Arsenal Women
    Nov 5 2024

In this episode of Ladies In Red, dive into the latest updates from Arsenal Women.

With the international break now over, our players delivered standout performances. Crucial victories were secured in Euro qualifiers and friendlies. From Frida Maanum’s goal-scoring masterclass for Norway to Katie McCabe’s leadership for Ireland, we’ve got all the main highlights.

However, this goal spree dried up as we returned to WSL action. I break down the recent match against Manchester United. An Alessia Russo goal looked to secure three points, only for United to equalize late on. The team’s struggles with finishing remain, and we’re asking the hard questions: Why are our players prolific on the international stage but falling short at the club? And how can communication on the pitch improve?

Finally, Edu Gaspar’s surprise departure as Arsenal's sporting director has left fans wondering about the impact on both the men’s and women’s teams. Edu’s commitment to Arsenal Women has been immense, influencing recruitment and strategy alignment. Could this explain the delay in naming a permanent manager for the women's squad? We’ll unpack what Edu’s exit might mean for the club's future and discuss how Arsenal might ensure continuity with a new hire.

Join me for a full episode as we reflect on the international break and Arsenal’s path forward in this (frustrating) season.

We’ll examine the key moments from their victories over Vålerenga in the Champions League and West Ham in the WSL. Has the team turned a corner, or is this just a temporary boost?

We’ll also explore what’s changed tactically under Slegers. Has there been a noticeable shift in the players’ mentality and performance? What do these results mean for the rest of the season? Is Slegers making a case to stay on, or does Arsenal still need a permanent head coach to step in?

And, most importantly, is this season back on track for the Gunners?

With the international break coming up, we'll discuss how the squad can build on this momentum and whether these wins are a sign of long-term recovery or a short-term lift. Tune in as we review the matches, highlight standout performances, and look ahead to what’s next for Arsenal Women!

  • Jonas Eidevall LEAVES Arsenal Women
    Oct 15 2024

This week on Ladies in Red, I am joined by Michael from the Arsenal Above All podcast for a deep dive into one of the biggest shocks in recent Arsenal Women’s history—Jonas Eidevall’s sudden, yet not surprising, resignation as head coach.

Originally, we planned to break down the weekend’s disappointing 2-1 loss to Chelsea at the Emirates. However, the news of Eidevall’s departure has taken center stage. We unpack everything from his tumultuous tenure to what comes next for the Gunners.

With Arsenal sitting 6th in the WSL, their worst start in over a decade, this decision didn’t surprise many, especially given the lack of goals, identity, and recent form. We reflect on Eidevall’s mixed legacy, from the highs of reaching a Champions League semi-final and winning two Continental Tyres League Cup titles to the growing frustrations of predictability in his tactics and inconsistency in team selection.

Michael and I discuss key issues that plagued his time at Arsenal. These include the team’s struggles in front of goal and the departure of star player Viv Miedema, who many feel was never fully backed by the club after injury, a move that may have contributed to the team’s drop in morale. We also explore how fan sentiment—like the graffiti outside the Emirates—has shifted as the team endured their worst home run in a decade.

With assistant coach Renée Slegers taking charge as interim head coach, we look at what her next two games mean for her future and the club. We also debate possible long-term replacements for Eidevall. From Arsenal legends like Kelly Smith to established WSL managers like Casey Stoney and Carla Ward, we speculate on who could come in to rebuild the squad and restore the team’s winning mentality.

As we gear up for Arsenal’s upcoming fixtures against Vålerenga in the Champions League and West Ham in the WSL, Michael and I discuss whether there’s still hope for this season or if the focus needs to shift toward long-term rebuilding.

Is this season already lost, or is there still everything to play for? And who’s the right leader to guide Arsenal Women back to the top? Tune in for an honest, in-depth conversation on where the team stands and what the future holds.

  • Ian Wright was Right: Arsenal's Mid-Table-Style Unpacked
    Oct 9 2024

In this episode of Ladies In Red: An Arsenal Women's Podcast, I reflect on what has been a frustrating and disappointing week for Arsenal fans.

After the excitement of last week, things took a turn, starting with a lackluster 0-0 draw against a struggling Everton side in the WSL. Dropping points at home in the Emirates is something we just cannot afford if we truly want to challenge for the title this season. With goals becoming increasingly elusive, I dive into why our attack is faltering and why this game felt more like a warning than just an off day.

The Everton result wasn’t just about missed chances; it highlighted a recurring problem for Arsenal—breaking down teams that sit in a low block. Despite creating several opportunities, our inability to convert big chances is worrying. Everton defended well, but this is a team that other top sides, like Chelsea and Man City, typically break down with ease. I’ll break down Jonas Eidevall’s post-match comments and look at the concerning stats, including Arsenal’s poor conversion rate despite creating more chances than anyone else in the league. Are we falling into old habits?

I also turned my attention to the midweek UWCL defeat to Bayern, a game that exposed even deeper issues. Arsenal looked flat and lacking intensity, and questions about Eidevall’s tactics are becoming louder. Have you hear what Ian Wright had to say about Arsenal Women recently? Yikes.

I explore whether the team’s inconsistent form, one-dimensional playing style, and lack of cohesion are pointing towards a larger systemic problem. Is Jonas’ position under threat? What needs to change before it’s too late, especially with a massive game against Chelsea on the horizon? Tune in for a breakdown of all these issues and more.

  • Shaky Starts: Arsenal Women’s Season Begins
    Sep 24 2024

Welcome to another exciting episode of Ladies In Red: An Arsenal Women’s Podcast!

This week, we're looking back on Arsenal Women’s recent performances. We start with our first leg against Häcken in the Champions League qualifiers, followed by the much-anticipated WSL opener against Manchester City—and the return of Vivianne Miedema.

Join me as I chat with Luce Casey, or Luce Chats Sports, an amazing creator known for her love of the Gunners. We delve into the less-than-ideal start to the 2024/25 season, discussing what went wrong in Sweden, resulting in a 1-0 defeat. We're we unlucky or just not clinical enough in front of goal? Is our style of play become too predictable? If we miss out on European football this season, what will that mean for Jonas Eidevall? Still, with the return leg pending this week, there’s all to play for.

We’ll also reflect on a slightly better, but still imperfect, start at the Emirates in front of an impressive 41,000 spectators. The team fought hard for a point in a 2-2 draw, with goals from Frida Mauunm and Beth Mead. But will it be enough alongside a fellow title contender over the course of the season? We talk about the positives and the negatives. And we look ahead to the next matches: Arsenal's second leg against BK Häcken and our first away game to Leicester in the league.

Tune in for all the insights!
