About this listen

Please note: This podcast contains references to suicide, domestic violence, and themes of a sexual nature.

Do you find it hard to talk to your sibling? The relationships we have with our siblings are more important than we often realise. How you were with your siblings is very important to how you are in the world. Therapy often focuses on romantic relationships or parent and child relationships but rarely does it consider brothers and sisters, and yet the sibling relationship is often the blueprint for how a person interacts with others throughout their lifetime.

In this new original series, Psychotherapist Philippa Perry explores six very different sibling relationships, and aims to bridge the communication gap within families. In a single intense session she goes under the skin of each of these relationships to find out what is working, what might not be working and how reflecting on this often overlooked relationship might benefit everyone involved.

In these frank and revealing conversations, there is laughter and also occasionally tears as Philippa sheds light on the inner workings of the sibling dynamic. If there is a conversation in your family that you have been meaning to have for a while, this podcast might help you finally gather the courage to talk.

If you or someone you know has been bereaved or affected by suicide or is having suicidal thoughts, there are a number of organisations who offer help and support including:

This set of podcasts are so gorgeous. They helped me to realise that there isn’t just one way to view our childhoods as siblings, and each of us are different people, our parents were different people in response to this so we did have different childhoods.
I walked up regularly listening to this series. I love my siblings and I understand them better now.

Lump in throat beautiful

I was already familiar with the presenter and author and really liked her book and the manner it was written.
Was absolutely delighted to find the podcast, and it has lived up to my expectation.
Sibling relationship hasn’t been covered much when it comes to the relationship topic, and I’m glad Philippa has decided to explore an overseen topic.

If only I could send these to everyone in our family that has been affected by some of the issues in these podcasts. Could be life changing for us.
Make sure you know where you're getting a hug from once you've listened.

Excellent podcast. A great example of what you can expect in psychotherapy, how first relationships impact our relationship with the world. Thanks Philippa.

I loved this podcast series, and all the conversations, but this one in particular. My sister and I recently stopped living together after 13 years and it was a huge change for both of us, but it seemed weird to feel and discuss that in a world so focused on romantic couple relationships. So this episode was validating and the ‘significant other’ concept helpful for me. The series shines a light on an area of human relationships that feels quite overlooked in society, and encourages listeners to reflect on their own experiences with siblings.

Interesting, moving, important and useful

Absolutely brought back the importance of the need to talk about our feelings and all feelings are valid.

Emotional and hard hitting

I so enjoyed this exploration of some of the longest relationships in our lives and hearing how different sibling pairs negotiate some hugely tough situations. Everyone was so brave in what they shared and how they opened up to each other. Hope there will be another series!

Extremely moving and fascinating
