Under the Banner of Heaven is based on the nonfiction novel by Jon Krakauer that follows the story of Jeb Pyre, a devout detective of Mormon faith, as he investigates the brutal murders of a young wife and baby that seem to be connected to an esteemed Utah family's descent into LDS fundamentalism. The show was created by Dustin Lance Black and stars Andrew Garfield, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sam Worthington, Wyatt Russell, Gil Birmingham, and Billy Howle.

It stars Natasha Lyonne, Charlie Barnett, Greta Lee, Elizabeth Ashley, Annie Murphy, Rebecca Henderson, and Chloe Sevigny. In season 2, the show follows Nadia, played Lyonne, and Alan, played by Barnett, as they navigate time travel instead of the time loop of season 1. Nadia takes a subway ride that ends up bringing her to 1982 where she finds herself in mother's past. There, she begins to uncover an old family mystery.
