  • What Happened to all the Good Music? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 30 2024

Most people, when asked, would probably agree that the best time for music was anywhere from the 1970's to the 1990's. Most of the music today just seems so over-processed, like it came off a conveyor belt.

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I talk about why music today is so watered down, how my taste in music evolved and how the meaning of songs today is much different and completely misses the point of trying to make a point.

Welcome to The Long Way Home, the podcast where we dive into the changes the world has gone through over the past 4 decades! Join host Josh "Bearheart" Hawk as he meanders along this windy road, recounting stories from his childhood in Ohio and reliving the late 80s', 90s' and even the turning of the clock into the new millennium.

We all know the saying, "you can't go home again", and that's more about the passage of time than anything else. Home, at least the way we all knew it as kids, doesn't exist. The world changes, people move on and life morphs into something we barely recognize as we work to raise our kids, pay our bills and try to find some semblance of normalcy.

  • Just How Dead is the Internet? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 27 2024

The dead internet theory has been batted around a lot over the past few years, but no one really takes it seriously. The idea that most of the new content online is made by, and reacted to by, bots seems far fetched to say the least, but could it actually be true?

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I delve into the rising level of fake stuff showing up online and talk about how we can make it all go away.

  • What is the Secret to Raising Kids? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 23 2024

    Send us a text

One of the most difficult, important and rewarding things you can do in life is raise a child. There's no instruction manual, and everyone else always knows what you should do and how you should do it a million times better than you do. I don't know how, but I've managed to get at least one of my kids to 18, and the others are closing in on that magical age where we all somehow become "responsible" adults.

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I talk about that journey and what I would have done differently. I also discuss the way my parents did things, and how they could have done them so much better.

Every event we go through has some kind of impact on our lives down the road. Some events are smaller than others, but each one comes together to make us who we are.

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I delve into some of my childhood memories and discuss how they shaped me as I aged.

  • How Does Climate Change Impact Our Mental Health? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 13 2024

When you think of climate change, you probably imagine polar ice caps melting, big hurricanes, wildfires and any number of other natural disasters. Rarely, if ever, do we think about how the changing climate impacts our mental health. Is there a link between things like seasonal depression and warmer winters or dryer summers?

    Sep 6 2024

How do you build a happy, healthy relationship that will last through all the tough stuff life throws at you? As someone who's been there, I can understand how hard it can be to make a relationship work and I know how to do it after being married for 16 years and together for 2 decades with my wife. We've been through thick and thin and I want to share what we've learned with those who may be struggling.

  • My Journey from Christianity to Atheism | The Long Way Home
    Sep 3 2024

    Send us a text

Every believer has times where they doubt their religion, some wind up being even more dedicated to their faith after those doubts and some fall away. I was part of the latter group a few years ago when I started having doubts and asking questions. It took months to really dig into my beliefs and years to fully accept the fact that I no longer believed in a god.

Growing up Christian in rural Ohio means you're likely to keep the faith of your parents when you become an adult, but for me it meant having to deal with the fact that I had questions no one would answer. It didn't really shake my faith to have those questions, but they lingered into adulthood where I finally sought answers and came to different conclusions than younger me would have ever expected.

  • Adults Are Not Allowed to Like Minecraft | The Long Way Home
    Aug 25 2024

    Send us a text

As a middle aged, father of 3, adult who likes to play videos games (namely Minecraft for the purposes of this podcast episode), I find it a little bit messed up how we as a society tend to frown upon and judge adults who enjoy this amazing pastime. If you're not hurting anybody, why should it matter what makes you happy? I think the truth is that most people, speaking of adults in general, wish they had the time to play video games in some capacity. And rather than actually making the time to play them, they come up with excuses about how being an adult means they have too many responsibilities to do fun things like playing games.

I happen to think it's complete hogwash. While there are some things you HAVE to do, there are a lot of things you CHOOSE to do that are not mandatory. You need a job to pay your bills, but outside of a small number of things required to make a living, everything else is optional.

Let me know in the comments if you agree/disagree and why. And if you play video games as an adult, what kinds of games do you most enjoy?
