The Penguin, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, I Saw the TV Glow, and More This Week on Whatcha' Watchin'

  • Summary

  • Welcome back to Whatcha' Watchin', where AP, Nitro, and Eric (world traveler extraordinaire) dissect their latest screen obsessions. This week: HBO Max's Penguin, the mind-bending I Saw the TV Glow, Netflix's Union, and the return of the Ghost with the Most in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

    Highlights and Lowlights

AP's week was a mixed bag. A trip to Lancaster County, PA (Amish paradise!) provided the high point, complete with stunning farmland, delicious food, and dreams of visiting the aptly-named Dutch Wonderland theme park. But back in the real world, a vacuum former project for Comic Con proved a frustrating low, with malfunctioning parts and a looming deadline.

Nitro, meanwhile, suffered the modern-day scourge of credit card theft (over $1,000 in golf club grips?!). But the sting was soothed by attending The Penguin premiere, complete with red carpet, early screening, and a meet-up with composer Michael Giacchino (and son Mic, who also worked on the show's score).

    Whatcha' Watchin'

The Penguin (Nitro): Taking place ten days after The Batman, this HBO Max series is a gritty, grounded take on the iconic villain. Colin Farrell nails it, and Nitro's hyped for more.

I Saw the TV Glow (AP): This psychological drama on Max, starring Brigette Lundy-Paine and Justice Smith, is more coming-of-age than horror. Think cerebral "what ifs" and a killer soundtrack. AP loved it, his wife, not so much.

Union (Nitro): Mark Wahlberg, Halle Berry, and JK Simmons in a spy action comedy on Netflix. Perfect background noise for chores, but don't expect a masterpiece.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (AP): The sequel that actually delivers! Michael Keaton is back and hilarious, with a perfect blend of old and new. Highly recommended for fans and newbies alike.
