  • Previously known as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight is the intersection of True Crime, journalism and systematic corruption. Welcome to the new face of MMP. True Sunlight is the antithesis of True crime. True Sunlight values accuracy over "access journalism". True Sunlight is shed with empathy — not exploitation. True Sunlight was created as a matter of public service — not just entertainment. While the name of the podcast has changed, our mission, values and team have not. We are simply expanding our horizons while continuing to shine a much needed bright light on crime and corruption wherever it appears. Celebrated journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are taking their style of reporting beyond Alex Murdaugh and his co-conspirators while pursuing justice for all the victims you've met so far. Ranked #1 and #2 globally in 2021 and 2023 respectively as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight provides unmatched insight into the crimes and criminals exposed on MMP and dives deep into new instances of corruption across the US. We empower listeners to understand their legal and judicial systems through investigative journalism while providing tools to hold agencies and public figures accountable in order to change those systems for the better. • TSP #69 - Alex Murdaugh’s Biggest Loss Yet? Buster Triples Down on Defamation Claims + Police Kept Public Info from Mica Francis Before Her Death
    Oct 3 2024
Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell celebrate Alex Murdaugh’s biggest loss yet … one that will effectively keep him behind bars for the rest of his life. Also on the show, Buster Murdaugh triples down on his defamation claims against Netflix and Hampton County reporter Michael Dewitt. In a federal filing this week, Buster argues that — though he left out the context of Dewitt’s words in his original filing in South Carolina — including all of Dewitt’s interview on “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal,” actually helps strengthen his claim. Plus, the drama outside Solid Rock Ministries church in Myrtle Beach has NOT calmed down. On Sunday, pastor JP Miller was accused of assaulting a protester dressed as Jesus, and protesters were accused of harassing JP’s alleged paramour by shouting “demeaning” comments at her. Mandy and Liz also took a look at the FOIA logs for Myrtle Beach and Horry County police departments to see who was seeking information on Mica Francis. And what they found was shocking: Before her death, Mica was seeking public information from the police … and they gave her next to nothing. • TSP #68 - Legal Bullying From JP Miller and Greg Parker + Russell Laffitte Appeal + A Bestiality Accusation?
    Sep 26 2024
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell take on the Good Ole Boys once again, starting with lawyers who knowingly file frivolous lawsuits. Last week Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller and his attorney Russell B. Long filed a defamation complaint against a paralegal who said he called her law office in search of a divorce attorney who could “destroy” his wife, Mica Francis, whose body was found in a North Carolina swamp last April. Not only is it laughable that JP believes this hurts his already-bad reputation, the complaint doesn’t articulate that anything the paralegal stated as fact is untrue. Also on the show, a newly released report from Horry County Police Department shows that JP Miller was accused of bestiality this past June. What?!?! We'll share all that we know about this public document and our ongoing fight with Horry County to release all that can be according to SC state law. And Mandy and Liz take a look at the checkered past of Mica Francis’ psychiatrist … Dr. Duchesne... the one who seemed to take JP’s narrative as fact. Note: Mandy and Liz both pronounce Dr. "Duchesne" as they interpreted/researched it but its the same person... Plus, an update on Russell Laffitte’s Federal Appeal Hearing and another South Carolina judge’s conduct is raising questions in the Beach case. So much to get into... so let's dive in... • TSP #67 - Medical Records Expose JP Miller’s Influence Over Mica’s Mental Health + Part Two of Chloe Bess and the Bowen Turner Hearings
    Sep 19 2024
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their coverage of two appeal hearings heard last week in the case of thrice-accused rapist Bowen Turner and his sweetheart plea deal. Today. listeners will get to hear Part Two of the Chloe Bess interview, where she talks about what it was like being in the courtroom and on her thoughts about how the system continues to coddle and make excuses for Bowen, who sexually assaulted her as a teenager. Also on the show, Mandy and Liz begin sharing their findings from the stack of medical records leaked to them in the Mica Francis case, starting with the first few months of 2018, the year of Mica’s first alleged suicide attempt. From the get-go, Mica’s marriage to Myrtle Beach pastor JP Miller was defined by a questionable mental health diagnosis that continues to plague her memory to this day, five months after her death. Records from January through March 2018 show that Mica had immediate doubts about this diagnosis and a — despite her husband’s insistence that she remain compliant with her medication — JP himself was playing pharmacist. Well researched, interesting story, BUT...

The many deaths surrounding the Murdaugh dynasty in South Carolina has been a developing, fascinating story over the past couple of years. This podcast is well researched and provides interesting insight into the case. Unfortunately I couldn't get pass 12 episodes, as I found the structure a mess and the host/ writer is (and I really hate saying this) one of the most infuriating and annoying individuals I have had the misfortune to hear. Incredibly conceited from the get go, she regularly boasts of her achievements with the story and dismissive to other media outlets (because she's the best). Her delivery has a "vocal fry", something I did notice, but didn't think about it too much until she told the listeners off for mentioning it in her comments. Bringing in her fiancé to tell us what an amazing journalist she is doesn't help. They talk about haters, a lot of complaining. She comes across incredibly arrogant, so much so it's a distraction. I wanted to support this, I think it's a fascinating, but tragic story. However I feel the writer's continuous boasting, unpleasant manner and placing herself at the centre of the tale is grating and frankly disrespectful to the victims in this story.

Fascinating story

The Murdaugh story is unbelieable and I am sure it will be made into a film - such a large web that touches so many areas. However Mandy's voice is very annoying and she is constantly telling you how wonderful she is. You can usually fast forward the first 10 mins and last 5 mins with her trying to sell you stuff or explain how great she is. If it wasn't because the story is just so amazing I would have turned off a long time ago.

Fascinating story, thoroughly researched however..

So far I'm 18 episodes in and I want to hear more but I have issues with the production,
Firstly Audible automatically takes you to the most recent podcast and if you are trying to capture story from the start then there's constant scrolling through.
Secondly, the disjointed ordering of podcasts is confusing, rather than episodes,1,2,3 etc you get an episode about Gloria Satter, then one about where's the money, then back to one about Stephen Smith, then about the money, etc etc, this so difficult to follow.
Thirdly there's a huge amount of repeated sound-bites so you hear the same pieces again and again and then you can miss the new bits of information.
Fourthly, I too find it annoying when the reporter is telling us how wonderful they are to have exposed a story that everyone else overlooked.
Finally, I pay a monthly subscription for Audible so its annoying to have so many adverts and I am unimpressed with the reporters fiancée bombarding me with the opportunity to advertise and how the reporter and her boss Will are changing world, yes be proud but you've not invented Penicillin!
Finally, finally I have zero complaints with Mandys voice it's genuine
