  • Ultraviolet Art Talks Season 2 Guggi
    Aug 29 2024

Closing Season 2 on this very special episode, Caren Sullivan talks to renowned international artist, painter, sculptor, once member of post-punk legendary band Virgin Prunes, Guggi, in 2020.

Born and working in Dublin, Guggi is an artist working with drawing, painting and sculpture, Guggi digs deep into a personal yet universal subject matter: the quotidian beauty of household objects.

He committedly revisits his signature motifs of bowls, jugs and vessels, using repetition and abstraction to conjure an almost meditative state. In his paintings and works on paper, their forms appear tentative: broken outlines against resonant washes of abstract colour. And yet when Guggi continues his investigations as sculpture, these humble instruments are bestowed with a renewed majesty and power: polished bronze or fibreglass forms that seem to harness and heighten energy, with the simplicity and timelessness of prehistoric artefacts. Connecting both approaches is a sense of openness and fluidity, an attentiveness to prosaic details.

  • Ultraviolet Art Talks Season 2 Paul McGrane
    Aug 29 2024

On this episode, Caren Sullivan Talks to artist, curator, Paul McGrane in 2020.

Paul McGrane (b. 1991, Dublin) is an artist & curator working in Dublin, Ireland. He graduated from Technological University Dublin in 2015 with a BA in Fine Art.

His practice focuses predominantly on painting and sculpture. His interests lie in public spaces such as places of worship, stadiums and sensory rooms. Nostalgia guides the creation of his work, drawing from personal memories rooted in family and place. McGrane's paintings are expressed using various facets of abstraction - colour, shape, light, motif. He uses a process of layering thin washes of pigment repeatedly over each other. The paint is then brushed in long vertical or horizontal strokes. This process can often lead to areas of the surface being overworked, in return the pigment then merges together and counter intuitively erases.

Recent awards include Hang Tough Solo Exhibition Award, Dublin, and Rua Red Winter Open Award (2019), Dublin. Recent exhibitions include Páipéar (2022) at Hang Tough Gallery, Dublin, (2021) at Rua Red, Dublin, and Winter Open Exhibition (2019) at Rua Red, Dublin.

    Aug 29 2024

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Anita Groener in 2020.

Anita Groener was born and raised in the Netherlands and moved to Dublin, Ireland, where she is based. Questions of migration, memory, place, time and what it means to be human today have catalysed the artist's practice since she left her native country. She works through drawing, sculpture, painting, video, animation and installation.

Her work constitutes a profound meditation on war, loss, displacement, exile, resilience, renewal, and hope through installations that painstakingly transform discarded materials such as twigs, twine, and cardboard into delicate sculptural metaphors for the interconnectedness of individual experiences, histories and world events.

Her work evokes experiences of displacement and the fragility of existence, as well as probing both the psychological effects of human tragedy and the

resilience that may result. "It is a questioning of perception and a longing to get closer to understanding human conscience."

  • Ultraviolet Art Talks Season 2 Harry Walsh Foreman
    Aug 29 2024

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Harry Walsh Foreman in 2020.

Harry Walsh Foreman Contemporary urban street life is full of distinctive characters and personalities. In his work he imagines the hidden everyday narratives of these individuals. These ideas formed the framework of his comic series 'First World Problems. In consumer terms, Western society has never had so much or needed so little. 'First World Problems' is a comic apologia for those who moan over trivial matters.

A key aspect of his work is the attempt to create a more interactive fusion between the viewer and the art. While he fully defers to the importance of the ‘white cube, he’s more concerned with creating a strong feeling of character and place, allowing his diverse work to be viewed as a conceptual whole.

Wash Foreman’s work is rooted in the ideas of social realism which allows him aframework for exploring contemporary life in Dublin. 'First World Problems' can be viewed as an artful analogy. The

series consists of both ink drawings and paintings which incorporate image and text. The paintings vary stylistically, highlighting the dissatisfaction felt by many in society through a judicious mix of paint application and technique. The text features philosophical and whimsical messages based around life in contemporary Dublin with a focus on the more mundane problems people encounter. These are both overheard snippets of conversations as well as original material by the artist.

  • Ultraviolet Art Talks Season 2 Cecilia Danell
    Aug 29 2024

On this episode, Caren Sullivan talks to artist Cecilia Danell in 2020.

Cecilia Danell (b.1985) is a Swedish artist based in Galway, Ireland.

Her practice is process based, where accumulated research into landscape and the psychology of place is coupled with a strong interest in materiality and making. For over ten years, Danell has returned to her family farm in Sweden to walk and gather research material for paintings.

The experience of being in the landscape, along with the physical process of painting in the studio, results in works that detach themselves from the photographic source material. She walks and traces an environment that she knows intimately, happening upon decaying remnants of human activity, further upending the romantic notion of nature as untended wilderness.

Recent and ongoing research interests include the psychogeography movement and the psychological impact place has on a person, speculative fiction and Science Fiction novels. What strikes her about these novels is humanity's ability to persevere and adapt in adverse circumstances. The human urge to find solace in a primeval landscape grows increasingly stronger amidst the uncertainty of our current condition. Yet wilderness is for the most part a construct and the places she depicts are managed forest landscapes. Her sculptural objects, which often accompany the paintings in the space, use the language of theatre props to construct objects with the surreal quality of being made in the likeness of something, yet falling short of true semblance.

Cecilia Danell is the 2022 recipient of the RHA Hennessy Craig Award for painting, the ESB Keating Award at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition, a 2017 Arts Council Next Generation Award and the 2011 Wexford Arts Centre Emergence Award and has received several bursary and project awards from the Arts Council. Recent exhibitions include: 'Kevin Kavanagh Presents: Cecilia Danell' (solo) Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise (2024), 'Following Threads' Crawford Art Gallery, Cork (2023) 'A Stillness Expanded' (solo) Claremorris Gallery (2023), Brush Lightly Through Fireweed Forests' (solo) Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin (2022), 'GENERATION2022: New Irish Painting' Butler Gallery, Kilkenny (2022), 'Parklife' The Glucksman, Cork (2022), 'Tactile Terrain' (solo), Luan Gallery, Athlone (2022), The Hennessy Craig Award Exhibition, RHA, Dublin (2022), 'I Trust The Quiet' (solo), Burren College of Art Gallery, Co Clare (2021), 'Mise en scène', Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris (2021), I set a Bait for the Unknown' (solo), Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin (2020), In a Landscape (solo) Ashford Gallery, RHA, Dublin (2019), Winter Wanderer' (solo), Kevin Kavanagh, Dublin (2019) and 'Futures - Series 3 Episode 2', RHA, Dublin (2018) with a forthcoming solo show at Solstice Arts Centre, Navan in 2025 curated by Brenda McParland.
