For centuries, children and adults have treasured the stories handed down by Aesop, a slave who lived in ancient Greece approximately six centuries B.C. Known for their charm and simplicity, these simple tales feature brief adventures of animals, birds, and beasts - with a message hidden in each narrative. Quiller-Couch translates four French fairy tales into English, some of which are perennial favorites, witness Disney's animated rendering of Beauty and the Beast or Jean Cocteau's critically acclaimed film version of the tale. Other fairy tales included in this compilation are Charles Perrault's The Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, and Cinderella.

"The Story of Peter Pan", by James M. Barrie, is one of the most famous tales about youth and dream-like adventures; this classic adaptation of Barrie's play will let you fly on the wings of your imagination. "The History of Tom Thumb" was the first fairy tale ever printed in English. "The Three Sillies" is a very old folktale, and has been handed down over the centuries for its entertainment value. "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" is a classic folktale of which numerous versions are known; they all delight and educate children about the importance of boundaries and personal property. Last but not least, "Jack the Giant Killer" is a fascinating folk tale coming from the Middle Ages, set during King Arthur's reign; it shows how a young man uses clever tricks to outwit terrible giants and rid England of their terrible threats.

Charles Perrault nació en París el 12 enero de 1628, junto a su hermano gemelo, en el seno de una familia perteneciente a la alta burguesía. Participó en la creación de la Academia de las Ciencias y en la restauración de la Academia de Pintura. Desde 1663, fue secretario de la Academia Francesa. Escribió cuarenta y seis obras, aunque es el género de los Cuentos de hadas, el que lo consagra como escritor.

Su primera obra recopilatoria, "Cuentos para ti", se caracteriza por los elevados valores éticos de las historias que componen el libro.
