The Queen of Spades stands at the peak of Pushkin's achievement in prose writing. The story was popular with the general reading public at the time, particularly for its striking plot. The story opens with a number of young officers conversing after a card game. One of them, Narumov, wonders why his grandmother, who possesses the secret of winning at the game of faro, never plays. Questo romanzo in versi, scritto da Pushkin tra il 1822 e il 1831, fu pubblicato nel 1833. Gli ultimi versi, scritti col tono di chi ha ormai vissuto molto ed è ormai vecchio (e in quel momento l'autore aveva 32 anni) sembrano forieri della morte precoce dell'artista. Nell'opera l'autore deplora l'assurdità dei duelli che troncano per delle sciocchezze una vita in fiore, a volte per mano degli stessi amici. Di fatto l'autore morì egli stesso in un duello a 38 anni.

The story is about three sisters. The youngest is chosen by Tsar Saltan (Saltán) to be his wife. He orders the other two sisters to be his royal cook and weaver. They become jealous of their younger sister. When the tsar goes off to war, the tsaritsa gives birth to a son, Prince Gvidon (Gvidón). The older sisters arrange to have the tsaritsa and the child sealed in a barrel and thrown into the sea.
