Les contes de la Bécasse sont un recueil de dix-sept nouvelles, où l'auteur met en scène ses contemporains avec humour et férocité.

Maupassant reste un auteur majeur de la littérature française dont l'influence ne s'est jamais démentie. Les nouvelles sont autant de tableaux de mœurs, vivants témoignages intemporels des hommes, des femmes, de leurs vies et de leurs tourments, de leurs passions et de leurs travers.

Écrite en 1879, Boule de Suif est la nouvelle qui a imposé Guy de Maupassant comme un maître. L'action se situe durant la guerre de 1870 : dix personnes fuient Rouen, occupée par les soldats prussiens, pour gagner Dieppe en diligence. Parmi ces dix personnes, se trouvent des bourgeois, des commerçants, des nobles, et une prostituée, surnommée Boule de Suif, à cause de son embonpoint.

Guy De Maupassant is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story and one of the form's finest exponents. The story "Boule de Suif" written in 1880 is his masterpiece. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's stories are characterized by their economy of style and efficient, effortless dénouements. Many of the stories are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s and several describe the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught in the conflict, emerge changed. Possessed of a voracious sexual appetite, bitter and frequently disillusioned by the history of his country and the foibles of its people is not a description that does justice to the tortured soul that was Guy de Maupassant. He was also a compassionate and deeply patriotic man, volunteering to fight for his country in the Franco-Prussian War at the age of 20 and again saw action reporting on the French campaign in Tunisia in 1881.
