The Rough Riders was the nickname given to the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War. Following the sinking of the USS Maine, volunteers were called up to assist in the war efforts. The Rough Riders are best remembered for their charge up San Juan Hill, east of Santiago de Cuba, on July 1, 1898. Soon after, the Spanish fleet left Cuba, and within weeks, the war ended. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., (1858-1919) served as the 26th president of the United States. He delivered the speech "Address to the Knights of Columbus" at Carnegie Hall in New York, on October 12, 1915. In the speech, he argued against partisanship based on religion; he called it a "wicked thing" either to support or to oppose someone because of the creed they profess. He asserted that political movements directed against a person because of their religious belief have never accomplished anything but harm.

Theodore Roosevelt delivered this speech in Provincetown, Massachusetts, at the laying of the corner-stone of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument on August 20, 1907. He remarked on the Puritans’ individual initiative, common sense, and ability to cooperate. Above all else, their sense of duty is singled out as a commendable quality.

In this speech, a young Theodore Roosevelt describes what he believes are the key principles to good citizenship. In addition to emphasizing ethical behavior, Roosevelt takes a firm stance on the necessity of engaging in politics and voting. He states unflinchingly, “The people who say that they have not time to attend to politics are simply saying that they are unfit to live in a free community.” To be “a good American citizen”, Roosevelt says one must boldly engage with the issues our nation faces today, and in doing so, shape its future.

Many consider Theodore Roosevelt to be America’s most conservation-minded president. Throughout his presidency, he worked to preserve endangered animals and their habitats.
