Book 2 of the Tarzan series. Tarzan arrives in England where he adapts to civilization, and then to America, but evildoers thrust Tarzan back into the jungle when they throw him overboard from an ocean liner, and he swims to shore for further adventures.

The action is set during World War I. While John Clayton, Lord Greystoke (Tarzan), is away from his plantation home in British East Africa, it is destroyed by invading German troops from Tanganyika. On his return, he discovers among many burned bodies one that appears to be the corpse of his wife, Jane Porter Clayton. Another fatality is the Waziri warrior Wasimbu, left crucified by the Germans. Maddened, the ape-man seeks revenge not only on the perpetrators of the tragedy, but all Germans, and he sets out for the battlefront of the war in East Africa.

The legendary Tarzan claims his birthright title as Lord Greystoke and starts a small family with Jane, now his wife. But just when things are going right, the evil Rokoff kidnaps Tarzan's infant son, Jack, luring Tarzan into a trap. After Rokoff exiles him on an island near the African coast, Tarzan uses his skills learned from the jungle to win the favor of various wild animals. Tarzan must enlist these creatures to help him track down Rokoff in order to save his family from certain demise.

A Princess of Mars is the first novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs's famous "Barsoom" science fiction series. John Carter, a Confederate American Civil War veteran is mysteriously transported to Mars, called "Barsoom" by its inhabitants. It all starts with a message in a bottle, a cry for help from a lost world. Submarine manufacturer Bowen Tyler was on an Atlantic journey to Europe, when his boat was torpedoed by one of his own submarines. He manages to survive, along with his faithful dog, Nobs, and with a little help from a passing tug boat, capture the U33, the very submarine that he built, and that had torpedoed him. With the German crew and the English tug crew, they drift to a lost island, almost as big as a continent, where exist many animals long since extinct elsewhere.
