Stendhal naît à Grenoble le 23 janvier 1783. En 1800, il découvre l'Italie et surtout Milan, où il séjournera deux ans. Le choc est immédiat. Désormais, il existera entre l'Italie et lui un lien étroit, ineffaçable. C'est dans la Péninsule qu'il rencontre "son" paradis : l'Italie est réelle, vivante, terre de la beauté, de la passion, du bonheur. L'écrivain lui restera fidèle toute sa vie. Au fil de ses différentes affectations dans l'armée napoléonienne à travers l'Europe, il écrit de nombreux essais psychologiques, des impressions de voyages, des critiques... Tous ces travaux resteront toutefois totalement ignorés de ses contemporains.
