On his 30th birthday, the chief cashier of a bank, Josef K., is unexpectedly arrested by two unidentified agents from an unspecified agency for an unspecified crime. The agents' boss later arrives and holds a mini-tribunal in the room of K.'s neighbor, Fräulein Bürstner. K. is not taken away, however, but left "free" and told to await instructions from the Committee of Affairs.

"A Report to an Academy" (German: "Ein Bericht für eine Akademie") is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. In the story, an ape named Red Peter, who has learned to behave like a human, presents to an academy the story of how he effected his transformation. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the German monthly Der Jude, along with another of Kafka's stories, "Jackals and Arabs" ("Schakale und Araber"). The story appeared again in a 1919 collection titled Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor).

Auf einer Gefängnisinsel wohnt ein Forschungsreisender einer ihn zugleich abstoßenden wie faszinierenden Bestrafung bei: Eine Exekutionsmaschine ritzt den Verurteilten in einer zwölfstündigen Tortur ihr Urteil in die Haut, bis diese schließlich - in einem Moment erlösender Offenbarung - sterben. Das behauptet zumindest der diensthabende Offizier, ein glühender Anhänger der Maschine, der sich schließlich pflichtbewusst selbst unter die "Egge" legt.

"Letzthin bei Felix. Auf dem Nachhauseweg sagte ich Max, daß ich auf dem Sterbebett vorausgesetzt daß die Schmerzen nicht zu groß sind, sehr zufrieden sein werde. Ich vergaß hinzuzufügen und habe es später mit Absicht unterlassen, daß das beste was ich geschrieben habe, in dieser Fähigkeit zufrieden sterben zu können, seinen Grund hat." Der in Prag aufgewachsene Karl Rossmann wird im Alter von sechzehn Jahren von seinen Eltern nach Amerika geschickt. Auf seiner unfreiwilligen Reise durch das Land trifft er Heizer, Bankiers und Senatoren, trunkene Maschinenschlosser, Liftboys, einsame Mädchen, Studenten und Laufburschen. Wie ein Blatt im Wind wird der junge Karl durch alle Gesellschaftsklassen Amerikas geweht, immer abwärts geht die Reise.

Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883 in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family. Life for the young Kafka and his passion for literature was often made an ordeal by his over-bearing and domineering entrepreneur of a father. His literary works are few in number but towering in influence. His masterpieces include ‘The Trial’, ‘The Metamorphosis’ as well as a number of short stories which reveal facets of humankind that truthfully could only be born from Kafka’s brain and pen.

In the tumult of times where individual is hampered by isolation, anxiety and frustration Kafka's stories pave a way for emancipation and search for personal salvation.

An odd but well-loved short story following steps into madness. A country doctor has had more work than he can handle, and the stress seems to have taken him to a place that seems as at home in nightmares as in the madness of an overworked mind. Kafka's work often lends itself to the turmoil of the human mind. In this respect the story does not fail to impress.
