Growing up, I was always mesmerized by new technology. High speed internet, email, GPS, smartphones, and social media were just some of the new technologies that burst onto my young adult scene. But it was not until I became a PhD student that I began to question the relationship new technology is having on the way we work, interact, and live. Who is designing these technologies? Who benefits (and loses) from the way technologies are designed and implemented? What implications do these technologies have on societal outcomes, especially inequality? Importantly, what can we do to create more beneficial outcomes for individuals, organizations, and society? These questions are at the heart of my first book, Inside the Invisible Cage: How Algorithms Control Workers. In this book, I examine how a digital platform for high-skilled workers increasingly used opaque algorithms to control worker experiences such that workers felt they were inside an "invisible cage." My findings have implications for how workers, digital platforms, organizations, and policy-makers can ensure the "future of work" is more equitable, which is especially important given the continued rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
