About this listen

Warwick, 1468. One drowsy summer afternoon, Sir Thomas Malory – politician, courtier, outlaw, renowned author of Le Morte D'Arthur – is seized from his garden and dragged to Newgate Prison for reasons unknown.

Shivering in his foul-smelling, filthy old cell, Malory mourns his misspent life as he awaits the execution bell. But when the locking bar lifts, he is greeted by a boy of about 12 winters: the gaoler's son. Giddy with relief, Malory seizes the opportunity to recount his deeds to an audience.

So begins a prison confession of a perilously exciting life full of sieges, battles and court intrigue. A Good Deliverance is the captivating tale of a man at odds with his past and the events that inspired him to write the first great work of prose fiction in English.

just loved the unusual style of the book

I really enjoyed this story , they way it moved from present to past however was not prepared for such an unexpected and unexplained ending , I was left feeling confused and a little shocked it ended so, another book maybe ?

A Good Deliverance by Toby Clements

A good story and very well read. It was very involving, and somehow you see it more vividly.

Super

Great story which kept my attention and kept me entertained. I won't do a spoiler so just get it and listen. Easy to listen to and relaxing. Narrator has pleasant English accent easy on the ear.

Unresolved

I enjoyed the storytelling nature of this book but it ended without telling you why he was even locked up, which had been the ongoing question throughout the entire book.

DISAPPOINTING

It is like A Good Deliverance was written by another author!

I absolutely loved the first 3 books of Toby Clements series Kingmaker series. (Sadly/weirdly I haven't been able to find the audiobook series anywhere to be able to listen to the 4th book)... I was pleased to hear A Good Deliverance would be available on Audible and have anxiously awaited it.

This book was so unengaging and uninteresting up to the point I listened, I have finally given up after just under one hour. I feel like some critic has unfortunately gotten into Clement's head and totally destroyed his epic story telling skills.

In the Kingmaker series his writing style is so descriptive and entertaining and his characters are so fleshed out, I hated pressing pause and was always eager to resume. I even listened to the first books twice, when unable to find the fourth book.

I have always thought Clements was seriously underrated and have considered him one of my favourite writers. Like Rothfuss, I hoped he would just write more. I still hope he writes more, but returns to his previous style.

* To be fair to the writer (who's other works, again, are among my favourites) I will say that I was driving when I listened to A Good Deliverance and finally gave up. Perhaps the book picks up later, but an hour of nothing much happening is my limit.

Disappointing.

I couldn't get to grips with this story. Very disappointed by this title - not what I expected from Toby Clements.
