About this listen

Delve into the world of fourteenth-century England, in this thrilling historical mystery. It may be enjoyed as complete in itself or as part of the Hugh de Singleton medieval mystery series.

When Hugh and Kate’s newborn son is taken to the church to be baptized, they are astounded to find that the locked font is completely dry. The possibility of a leak is quickly ruled out, and just as Hugh is beginning to wonder if there may be a sinister explanation for the stolen holy water, Father Robert is found lying motionless by the rood screen in a pool of blood.

Meanwhile, parliament has passed a poll tax, stipulating that everyone above the age of fourteen is to be taxed equally. Folk are soon scrambling to find the money to pay, and, inevitably, unscrupulous elements in society see an opportunity to feed off people’s desperation and make some cash. But what connection can there possibly be between this and events at Bampton?

Yet again another brilliant tale. Shame it was quite short. Like Christmas had come round again to have another instalment…looking forward to May for the next one.

Good old goings on at Galen house

Great story and a good addition to the series. Was very cross at being given an opening for the next mystery in the closing pages. Typical serial tactics I felt manipulated.

Much too short!

Very well narrated with the right balance between drama, accent and storytelling. looking forward to the next.

enjoyable as usual

I had been eagerly awaiting this book on Audible, but alas, it wasn't a patch on any of the previous Hugh de Singleton novels. The story was ok but it lacked the usual intrigue and felt flimsy in comparison with its forebears. Disapointing overall.

Not as good as the previous books

As usual Sir Hugh is dogged in his attempt at getting to the bottom of the mystery.
interesting snippets of history on the way. Always a good bedtime read.

A good medieval mystery

As a fan of the books I had been eagerly waiting for the polluted font. So short? So predictable. Certainly not up to usual standard. Tim Bruce narration is excellent (as usual) but I wonder what he thought of the plot. Fingers crossed next book is back up to standard.

unexpectedly disappointing

After waiting for the next instalment for some time I must say I was disappointed both with the length of the story and the numerous flaws in the plot. I hope the next tale is more in the vein of Mr Starrs` earlier works.
Still enjoy listening to Tim Bruce but even he could not lift this lead weight out of the font it was submerged in!

Disappointing.

’ve followed Hugh de Singleton from the start, but The Tainted Font felt rushed and underdeveloped. At just over 100 pages, it lacked the depth, detail, and mystery that usually define the series. Key moments were glossed over, and the story ended just as it was picking up. Loyal readers deserved more after 16 books of investment.
Narration, however, was as good as usual.

Very disappointing

It was pleasant enough but the plot was barely interesting and the motive for the crime was daft and full of holes.
