About this listen

Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, Janice Hadlow, Gill Hornby, and anyone with a Bridgerton-shaped hole in their lives.

‘Angelica had always known her lack of high birth, fortune or influence debarred her from being presented as an eligible young woman worthy of marriage. To cap it all, being an actress assured she was utterly beyond the pale of respectability.'

Nightly at the Covent Garden Theatre in London, an enchanting actress is wowing the crowds with her affecting portrayal of Ophelia. Preyed on by rakes and opportunistic young bucks, feted by dukes and earls, even the Prince Regent himself, Angelica Leigh is a sensation.

But in Regency England, beauty and talent are not enough to be considered marriage material, so when the eminently eligible Lord Charles Latimer sets his heart on Angelica, his uncle is sent to intervene.

As a highly respected, hard-working and wealthy lawmaker, The Honourable Ivor Asprey, is himself seen as desirable husband material, but widowed with an eleven-year-old daughter Elinor, he has forsaken all thoughts of romance. Lord Latimer’s mother, the Duchess of Arlington, despairs of her son, despite being reassured by Ivor that his infatuation with the actress will pass. But there is something about Angelica Leigh that demands attention, and even the austere and upstanding Mr Asprey isn’t immune to her charms.

Sunday Times bestselling author Jane Dunn brings the Regency period irresistibly to life.

Upstaged

Well narrated. The plot is almost a direct copy of Georgette Heyer's Faro's Daughter, but instead of the MC running a gaming establishment, she is an actress. Faro's Daughter (published in 1941) happens to be one of my all time fav books so I am a little perturbed and annoyed by such a blatant rip off. That being said, and as I knew what was coming in the plot, I just sat and waited for it all to pan out. This book is upstaged by the original, and it would be wonderful if this narrator could re-narrate Faro's Daughter in a reissue.

I enjoyed that the writer was able to keep to the language of period, and enjoyed the good descriptions of costumes and locations.

IT WAS OK

Charismatic, colourful, fabulous.

Another exotic burst of creativity by writer Jane Dunn. Hard to put down or stop listening. A great imaginative & historical tale with a few challenging twists along the way.

Delightful from start to finish…

I certainly enjoyed this book very much - as all the characters are most likeable and the narrator is doing a great job

The story is charming and entertaining…

Boring

I cannot tell you how many times I fell asleep whilst listening to this audio book, there was nothing wrong with the plot but the narration was terrible. There was very little difference between the characters voices and no depth or excitement to the dialogue. The narrator might as well been reading a telephone directory. Very disappointing

Just Wonderful!

I just adored this latest Regency romance novel from Jane Dunn! The prose was elegant and such a pleasure to read. There was a richness to the character-building and relationships in the story that truly pulled me in. By the close of her tale, I felt so well-acquainted with our heroine and loved the romantic conclusion. I've enjoyed reading all of Jane Dunn's Regency romances but this one had an extra special charm to it, so reminiscent of classic novels from the early 19th century.

As a side note, I thought the narrator was just brilliant! She really brought all the characters to life.

Enjoyable

A really good story even if highly unlikely. The characters are really likeable and there's little angst.

Surreal and Stupid

Trying to pass it off as a copy of Georgette Heyer, show she has never read the books. At least Heyer wrote about her class and time.
This hero is an illegitimate daughter an actress, her mother is the mistress of a married man.
After that it becomes more ridiculous, an unbelievable Irish father. A member of parliament, heir to a Duke and so on. The parliamentary daughter is too ridiculously too naive. Unbelievably set peices, a true parallel universe. Don't waste you money, as the tale is frustrating and unbelievable.
