About this listen

An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.

For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.

Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.

But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

Excellent extended universe work

An engaging story that jumps easily between past, present, and future, cleverly weaving interconnecting themes, new material and previously established canon. The cherry on top is having the book narrated by the author, as I could imagine no one else giving voice to Garak. Highly recommended for any DS9 fan.

It's a miracle this audiobook exists

This book has been out of print for so long, and I, along with many many other DS9 fans have been desperate to get our hands on it. So to have it properly produced, and performed so beautifully by Andrew Robinson, is an absolute gift. I am so thankful this exists, but....
WHEN ARE WE GETTING A PHYSICAL RELEASE??? I want to hold this book in my hands! I want to put it on my shelf and display it proudly! There's clearly a market for it, so come on Star Trek and TAKE MY MONEY!

A must-listen for any Deep Space Nine fan!

I've always loved the character of Garak, but Andrew Robinson's interpretation of his inner life and history made me feel sympathy for him in a way I didn't anticipate. The book provides a deep insight into the overbearing mentors and unforgiving circumstances which shaped this "unfinished man" into the enigmatic and duplicitous figure we all know. Moreover, the book's portrayal of a remorseful, slowly democratising post-war Cardassia is extremely compelling. I hope that when we next see the Cardassian Union on-screen, the writers take some prompts from this book's vision. Andrew Robinson's performance is flawless as ever, and his impressions of various familiar characters gave me a good chuckle more than once. If you've just finished your latest retrospective of the series and have a DS9-shaped hole in your heart, this book is sure to please.

Just plain, simple Garak

Listening to this audiobook was simply a joy to the ears and mind.
Andrew J Robinson IS Elim Garak! Just when you think you know everything about the tailor with special skills from watching DS9, this novel “opens the classified files from the Obsidian Order” and puts us in a holodeck programme showing the childhood, adolescence and adult experiences of Garak, and we now know why he was left behind in exile at DS9 and Dukat’s hatred of him.
Remember, everything is the truth, especially the lies.

Very good

This is the first of the Star Trek books I’ve read, i guess i’d always dismissed them thinking them low quality writing and not really part of star trek… but this is outstanding in all elements, so well written and performed, will have you re-watching ds9 too

A charming tale of a Cardassian tailor

Like many other fans, I was disappointed to find the physical book out of print and was very excited for this audiobook. Having Andrew as narrator, giving voice to Garak's thoughts, gave the whole story an extra level of authenticity that I truly enjoyed. Well worth the wait!

Wow!!!

Garak's own background read by the actor who portrayed the 'tailor' himself. Andrew, once again, brought Garak to life and I could actually imagine myself watching his life unfold thanks to the brilliant reading and writing of the story. Absolutely amazing!!

Plain Simple Garak

As a huge DS9 fan and Garak being my favourite character this was truly a fantasic experience. The inflections and subtle notes from Garak can only be portrayed in voice by the magnificent Andy Robinson. This audiobook is a must for any DS9 fans
