About this listen

'Abandon is terrific . . . A great storyteller hitting his stride' – Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series A century-old mystery - and a desperate battle to survive. Abandon is a compulsive standalone thriller from Blake Crouch, the New York Times bestselling author of Dark Matter and Recursion.. . .

On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman, and child in a remote mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins, and not a single bone found.

Now, journalist Abigail Foster and her father, a historian, have set out unocver the truth. Exploring the area, they are joined by two backcountry guides: a psychic and a paranormal photographer. The long-abandoned town is, according to rumour, haunted.

But Abigail and her companions are about to learn that the town’s ghosts are the least of their worries. Twenty miles from civilization, with a blizzard bearing down, they realize they are not alone.

The ordeal that follows will test this small team past the breaking point as they battle the elements and human foes alike and discover that the town’s secrets still have the power to kill.

Part journey into old-West history, part nail-biting survival thriller, Abandon is a bloody, darkly surprising tale as only Blake Crouch could deliver.

Great performance - well written...but...

I don't know...I struggled to get into this one compared to the authors other books...I felt like I was waiting for a big sci fi twist that never came.

Loved the story but..

I really enjoyed the story so decided to get it on Audible to enable hubby to listen to it. We had to return it as the narration was atrocious. The first hour went well but when one of the female narrators tried to sound like a male marine (already quite a corny character) she was terrible and we had to switch it off. Hubby will read the book instead.

Not what I was expecting from Blake Crouch

A bit disappointed with this book. Not really how the blurb portrays it. After having read Dark Matter, Recursion and another newer book by Blake Crouch, Abandon just seemed lack lustre. I dnf'd after 4hrs and looked up the plot and what happens... all I can say is I'm glad I didn't spend the final 9hrs listening to it, quite predictable. Well written and the narrators were great, just not as good as his other books

I abandoned it

Narration was reasonably well done though the hackneyed gravelly cowboy voices were quickly wearing to the ear. Jumps all over the place and is dull. Just not a very well written story at all - got a third way in and realised that I just didn’t care what happened next at all and there wasn’t a likeable or relatable character in it. Nowhere near the quality of his other books. I have seldom been more relieved to abandon a book. Waste of a credit.

Not what I expected

Not a bad book, probably, just not so much my thing and definitely not at all what I was expecting, having read (and loved) several other BC books - the Wayward Pines series, Dark Matter and Recursion.

I had to re-listen to the first few chapters over and over again as I really couldn't get into it and my mind just wandered, and I only made myself continue, and then actually finish, more out of stubbornness than interest in what was going to happen.

The narration was grating at times, too, I'm sorry to say.

So much potential

Great narrators for the most part, and I like that Crouch often has several voice actors narrating. and it feels like they are acting more than reading, and I enjoyed that for the most part.

The story could me a lot more thought provoking and exploring. It might be because I am used to Crouch's newest works.

Middling

Couple of twists and turns but not the edge I was expecting from this author.

Lost the plot

This does not feel like it’s come from the same author who did the fantastic Wayward Pines books.

Trying to avoid spoilers but not sure if there are any spoilers to ruin the story.

The character development was poor, the premise was great but poorly executed. I lost track so many times of who, what, when and where. The story was disjointed and tried to be too clever but ended up being a convoluted mess of ideas and brainstorming.

I think the author was too busy context switching between projects and didn’t do this story proper justice.

In summary the performance was top notch but if you want a spook mystery thriller this is not the book you are looking for.
