About this listen
A definitive guide to understanding those on the autism spectrum so you can make meaningful connections.
Do you work with people who are on the autism spectrum, and you want to find ways to connect with them? Are you worried that your lack of understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is causing issues in relationships with your friends, family, or coworkers? Do you suspect someone you are close to may have ASD and you want to better understand what they deal with on a daily basis? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you have come to the right place. By understanding the neurodivergent or atypical brain and finding ways to better support those with autism, we can begin to change this.
This audiobook will tell you how to do just that. In this guide, you will discover:
- A look at neurotypical and neurodivergent brains, and how it is important to understand “normal” as a subjective term
- What ableism is, and why negative attitudes toward ASD cause those on the spectrum to feel like they need to mask or camouflage their true selves
- A look at the eight senses (yes, eight!) and how the neurodiverse brain may deal with sensory overload on a regular basis
- Communication difficulties of those with ASD and strategies for communicating thoughtfully and effectively with atypical individuals
- The struggles of living in a neurotypical world when you have a neurodivergent brain–and the mental health struggles this can cause
- Why people on the spectrum sometimes get stuck in black-and-white thinking, and how to break free of the cognitive distortions that cause this way of thinking
- Common executive functioning issues with ASD (like time management and impulsivity), and proven ways to help in these areas
- The steps to getting a diagnosis if you think you may be on the spectrum
- And much more.
Living with autism doesn’t mean living away from society. Take the first steps in understanding adult autism today.

Kelley's book takes a comprehensive approach to exploring the various ways in which our brains function, emphasizing the crucial point that "normal" is a subjective concept. The audiobook delves into the detrimental effects of ableism on individuals with ASD, shedding light on why they might feel compelled to mask their true selves. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing neurodiversity.
Moreover, Kelley addresses executive functioning issues often associated with ASD, such as time management and impulsivity, and offers proven methods to assist individuals in these areas. The inclusion of practical solutions makes this audiobook an invaluable guide for both those on the spectrum and those wanting to understand and support them.
Furthermore, the audiobook outlines the steps to obtaining an ASD diagnosis, offering guidance for individuals who may be considering this process or seeking to understand their own or a loved one's situation.

I particularly gained a lot of value from the advice on how to converse with people with autism and what to practice, such as being patient and clear and avoiding things like sarcasm and body language. I am guilty of taking these things for granted and not being aware of them, and this book has reinforced my attention to these factors.
I also liked how the author goes a step further and explains why and the meaning of the symptoms that people with autism show, such as outbursts and the need for routine, etc. A clever quote from the book I found useful was, “Autistic people see the world from inside a glass room.” This simple phrase puts into perspective what way those with autism see the world and gives us a much better understanding.
Overall, great book, and perfect for those that are wishing to further their knowledge in supporting adults with autism.
