About this listen

Aurelian, Emperor of Rome, has one last enemy left to conquer: In Gaul, the usurper Tetricus holds sway, and Aurelian will need every last man if he is to unify his domain and bring peace to the Empire.

One of those men is Cassius Corbulo, now seconded to the legion of Prefect Venator in southern Gaul. When a leading general is abducted on the eve of battle, Cassius is ordered to find and rescue him before the enemy gain crucial intelligence. As ever he is accompanied by attendant Simo and Indavara, the ex-gladiator bodyguard. After a punishing few years, both Cassius and Indavara doubt themselves: Do they still have the strength and courage to survive this deadly mission behind enemy lines?

Their foe is Volosus: A veteran agent as resourceful as Cassius but far more ruthless. If he is victorious, Tetricus will gain a crucial advantage that might turn the tide of the coming war.

Really enjoyable story with plenty of intrigue and great fight scenes.
My only gripe is that I haven’t read the previous books yet (hopefully to change soon!) but this is enough of a standalone story for it not to be needed! :)
Nigel does a fantastic job. He has the ability to tell stories as I imagine the storytellers of old did and really keeps you inbolved. He has great character voices too so you’re never confused as to who is speaking.
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.

Great!

Great six books

I have read the previous six books in this series several times. At the time of writing this review there are over 700 titles in my audio book collection. As with this set of books there are some sets that I have read several times and will again read and re-read.

You will surely appreciate whatever your genre in audio books sometimes you come across the perfect combination of author and narrator. These seven books meet that criteria. Nigel Peever is truly artistic. You will likewise agree that some narrators may read several books by differing authors and maybe occasionally they do their master piece. Nigel Peever has truly brought the characters throughout these 7 books to life. He gives us substance, emotion, passion, in short, this is a great piece of work...

Now, the books themselves? Nick Brown has truly proven to be a great historical fiction writer. Each of these books were gripping. Whilst, there are other authors who write some great work in and around the time of the Roman Empire this set is up there with the better sets of said authors. Ben Kane’s Road to Rome set of books I have read several times whilst he has also produced some really good work in this era it is this set that floats my boat to the need to re-read more regularly than others in his Roman work. Now, I want to be very clear Ben Kane has written phenomenal material and most has likewise been brilliantly read but, Nick Brown may not have the status of Ben and perhaps now Ben has got some serious competition. Yes, I’m aware of Simon and like with Ben I have invested a small fortune in their books. But, these 7 books by Nick Brown are a definite investment in the future because you will surely wish to re-read the plots, intrigue, mystery, history, loyalty, friendship, and so so much more. Nick, I trust that you will either utilise your skills to bring us some more great material. Although, you have the scope to bring us more in this series but please pleas do not ruin what as gone before by over egging the pudding. And one more big ask, make sure Mr Peever takes up the gauntlet should you give us some more entertainment. Thank you.

Absolutely marvellous

Five stars for 1 of my favourite authors. A thrilling finale to an amazing series, and I was lucky enough to win a copy from the author himself.

looking forward to any future books!

Fantastic series of books that kept getting better and better. Narration also was excellent. It brought the characters to life.

Great series. Great spin on old Rome

I absolutely loved this audio book, the narration was excellent, it did take me a while to get used to the characters sounding different to the way they sound in my head but once passed that I was hooked. Fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable, I only listen to audio books when I go for my daily walk which usually last for an hour.... which turned into two hours on quite a few occasions when there was a particularly gripping development unfolding. The only negative is that it ended.... and it is sadly the last instalment in the series 😿 I will greatly miss the adventures of Indavara, Simo and Corbulo, they have been fab companions.

Didn’t want it to end.

Excellent final book in an excellent series.
Ok the Brummie accent on a Gaulish servant is a bit annoying but apart from that the whole series is well worth the listen .
Highly recommended.
