About this listen

A semi-famous artist announces her plan to drive cross-country from LA to NY. Thirty minutes after leaving her husband and child at home, she spontaneously exits the freeway, beds down in a nondescript motel and immerses herself in a temporary reinvention that turns out to be the start of an entirely different journey.

Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic and domestic life of a 45-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectations while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman. Once again, July hijacks the familiar and turns it into something new and thrillingly, profoundly alive.

Wild Ride

A road trip to the centre of a self. This book is like a modern Mrs Dalloway or My Year of Rest and Relaxation but with more interior design. Beauty, authenticity and everyday life.

It was ok

Character was too self indulgent I couldn’t love her, I found her really annoying, the story had so much potential too

Not for me

It was very well written and Miranda did an excellent job narrating it - there’s something very special about having a book read by the author however the story itself was underwhelming- I just didn’t connect to it - the way it was written suggests the book was supposed to be quite profound but I just wasn’t moved by it - but I suspect this book is not aimed at readers below the age of 30

Powerful

This read like an autobiographical stream of consciousness. It took me a little while to get into but once I had, I was gripped. So raw and real. This ongoing monologue. Reading by the author made it even the more powerful. If you’re not sure at first, stick with it!

Style over substance

I discovered MJ through a recent New York Times interview and was intrigued by her intention to “change the world.” While the depiction of non-penetrative intimacy with Davy was fresh and interesting, the rest of the novel felt indulgent—steeped in privileged, Hollywood-style introspection, with little sense of the everyday struggles most people face.
Though beautifully narrated in her own voice, the plot was disjointed, the menopause references overly prescriptive (at times like product placement), and the ending fell flat. Ultimately, it lacked the depth and relatability I was hoping for.
Having said all this - I am going to check out her movies as she is a clearly a multi-talented artist🍿
