About this listen
For fans of Naomi Novik and Katharine Arden, a dark gothic fairy tale from award-winning author Angela Slatter.
Orphaned as a young child, Mirin O'Malley has been brought up by her grandparents on their isolated, rambling estate Hob's Hallow. Long ago her family prospered due to a deal struck with the mer, the terrifying creatures who live in the depths of the sea: safety for their merchant ships in return for a child of each generation. But for many years the family have been unable to keep their side of the bargain and their fortunes have suffered as a result. When Mirin's grandfather dies, her grandmother puts in train a plan to restore their glory - but at the price of Mirin's freedom. Finding amongst her grandfather's papers evidence that her parents may still be alive, Mirin is determined to escape and discover the truth about her origins. This takes her on a treacherous journey to Blackwater, the estate her parents built when they fled Hob's Hallow, but on arrival Mirin finds the estate in decline and her 'Uncle Edward' in charge: where are her parents, and who is this Edward Elliott really?
A story of mystery and magic and the strange creatures that lurk beneath the waves.

An enjoyable read
The novel, was interesting and well written. A story of secrets and what they can grow into, of expectations and how they can disappoint you.

Slow burn character driven story
3.5⭐️
Dark fantasy which incorporates Irish mythology and a sprinkle of witchcraft. It has a very historic feel which the language used really compliments.
Not a favourite for me

An earthly tale of magic and mermaids
Merrin Elliot, bound to the O’Malley family by blood and obligation, decides she wants a different life to the one written and talked about for generations. Deals with the sea folk and with glimmerings of magic, she tries to subvert the path being forced on her as she tracks down family she didn’t know she had.
Beautifully lyrical and narrated. Merrin is a great character and the first person narrative drew me in completely. A great earthly tale with magic, tension, unraveling mysteries and courage without any cloying sentimentality. A great listen highly recommended.

Brilliant
I loved it!! Witches, magical creatures, deaths, love, betrayal, intrigues, greed, power hunger, family secrets and feminine empowerment. An evident denunciation of the toxic patriarchy we still endure, an accurate rendition of what true love really is.
The story starts slow, but it grips at you eventually as more secrets and intrigues enter the scene.
A.G Slatter is an amazing writer, her use of metaphors and nature description is entrancing; The way she creeps into the psyche of each character is truly masterful. The rendering of feminine intuition, the emotional world of broken men and women, I was totally hooked.

Hugely enjoyable read
I'm suprised how much I enjoyed this read! It's not my usual genre at all. The narration by Aoife McMahon is the jewel in the crown here.. Just perfect narration.
