About this listen

Following Anne of Green Gables (1908), this book covers the second chapter in the life of Anne Shirley. We learn of Anne's doings from the age of 16 to 18, during the two years that she teaches at Avonlea school. It includes many of the characters from Anne of Green Gables, as well as new ones: Mr. Harrison and his foul-mouthed parrot, Miss Lavendar Lewis, Paul Irving, and the twins Dora (sweet and well behaved) and Davy (mischievious and in constant trouble). Anne matures, slightly, but she gets into a number of her familiar pickles, as only Anne can: She accidentally sells her neighbor's cow (having mistaken it for her own), gets stuck in a broken duck house roof while peeping into a pantry window, and more.

I would love to have Anne as a friend

Would you consider the audio edition of Anne of Avonlea to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the print and audio version of Anne of Avonlea equally. I do enjoy hearing the stories read allowed as they are familiar favourites and make me feel as though I am visiting friends

Who was your favorite character and why?

I like Marilla Cuthbert because she is the complete opposite of Anne but begins to take on some of Anne's wonderful personality traits.

Which character – as performed by Colleen Winton – was your favourite?

Colleen Winton gave voices to all the characters and I could not choose a favourite because she was a pleasure to listen to and brought life to their personalities.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Listening to Anne is a journey through an array of moments of pleasure, sorrow, laughter, tears. A tumult of emotions.

Any additional comments?

I enjoy these books so much that my dream is to travel to Canada to see where L M Montgomery wrote about Anne.

The perfect sequel

Just as lovely and beautifully written as the first book, my only tiny complaint is the squeaky voice Anne is given in the begging, but I must have gotten used to it because half way though I didn’t even notice and just loved this book as much as I loved Anne of Green Gables!

Painful narration

If you can try to push through with the tedious narration, the story is mediocre. Mostly predictable, but easy enough to listen to for a long drive. The narration was stilted and read as if reading for the first time. As well as some ridiculous voices for the characters.
