About this listen

Abby and Hetty are best friends. Aren't they?

A deliciously dark novel about the unravelling of a friendship, for fans of Liane Moriarty, Taylor Jenkins Reid and Donna Tartt. Narrated by Nicola Coughlan (Derry Girls, Bridgerton).

Life’s not going well for forty-year-old Abby. When her beautiful and charismatic best friend dies suddenly, she’s left reeling. Hetty’s always been such a dominant force in her life; now Abby must figure out who she is – and who she wants to be – without Hetty by her side. Abby has always been the odd one out in Hetty’s wealthy, privileged friendship group.

Despite their differences, Abby has managed to carve out a place for herself. But Hetty isn’t an easy friend to have. She blows hot and cold, alternating between fierce loyalty and unwarranted cruelty. Abby accepts both versions of Hetty, just grateful for the attention … until she’s not. From divorces and weddings, via awkward dinner parties and dead-end relationships, to soul-sucking first jobs and dubious flatshares, Abby recounts the story of her great friendship with Hetty in reverse.

Finally, we meet Abby and Hetty when they first meet each other: as fresh-faced eighteen-year-olds with their whole lives ahead of them…and no idea of the tragedy that lies ahead.

Very good narration

Loved the main character, kept hoping she would realise how awful her friend was. Narrator was brilliant

Nicola Coughlan’s performance. Stand out

Good story guessed the twist but very listenable. Narration was terrific, a gentle listen and Penny was a great character

Lovely reading voice

I liked this novel a lot. Wasn’t going to go past the first five minutes as I’m more of a Reacher and action buff. But the narrator’s voice just somehow drew me in and I stayed..

Totally binge-worthy!

I loved this totally addictive story of friendship, betrayal and toxic class snobbery (very familiar from University life in Scotland!). Hetty is truly despicable! Nicola Coughlan’s narration was the icing on the cake at bringing this brilliant story to life. I raced through this in a couple of days as I was so hooked. Would totally recommend and would love to see the next novel from Sarah Forbes Stewart!

Just brilliant - dark, witty, GIVE ME MORE

I absolutely loved this (audio)book. From the first page, I was grabbed and it didn't let go so I finished in 1.5 sittings! The main characters of Abby and Hetty were in some ways sympathetic and in some ways fun to hate -- they felt real, but thrown into turbulance through their decisions and mistakes. Some of the scenarios presented were so close to the 40-something (and prior, as the book flashes back in time) life that it made me question some of my own interractions; how we present ourselves to others, who we really are and how we might come across in their minds. There are also other teeth-grinding characters as well as some MVP's. The story itself is a page turner with some fantastic twists, whilst still resonating on the human level. I can't wait for whatever Stewart's next book may be, and would gladly read more of these characters and/or their friends if there was more to uncover. The narrator also did a fantastic job and really brought the characters to life without making them sound stereotypical or "over-acted", very naturally performed and engaging. In short, "Aren't We Lucky" comes Very highly recommended!

A cut above the rest

This is a very special book, so much better than your average psychological thriller. I couldn't stop listening today, and was totally shook by the ending. Amazing characters, which Nicola Coughlan does an amazing job bringing to life. Everything just so intelligent, astute and well-observed. All round an amazing Audible original and I'd love to see more like this
