About this listen

Andrew Williams enlisted in the Parachute Regiment despite a turbulent upbringing at just 16. Deployed to the deadly frontlines of Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2006, he confronted the brutal realities of warfare, engaging in some of the most intense combat witnessed by the British Army since the Korean War. After his military service, Andrew transitioned into domestic counter-intelligence. He spent over a decade as a high-risk security consultant, navigating some of the world’s most dangerous and unpredictable environments. These harrowing experiences forced him to face not only the physical dangers around him but also the deep, often unseen, psychological scars left by war. Beyond The Drop Zone, takes you on a gripping journey from patrolling the streets of Northern Ireland to war-torn Iraq, coming face to face with ISIS, and engaging in fierce battles in Afghanistan with 3 PARA. This raw and unflinching memoir reveals the psychological toll of combat, Andrew’s struggles with mental health, and his fight against a life-threatening illness. It is a powerful account of overcoming immense adversity, finding a path to healing, and discovering the strength of perseverance. This is his story, told in his own words.

Gripping story, bravely told

A gripping tale of courage, determination and beating the odds. Thoughtful and reflective Andrew leaves nothing out, articulating that although he left the war behind, his battles had only just begun. A good story with an important message.

Fortitude around every corner

A brutally honest and humble account of a life that has faced many challenges, peaks and troughs. Absolutely worth hearing the story and its sobering chapters, positivity and fortitude.

Gripping

Not my usual sort of read but I was gripped throughout this story of bravery, strength and resilience. Andrew reading this story himself gives the audio book an added layer of authenticity. A really telling story of the harsh reality of military life, the horrors and sacrifices that occurred in the middle east.

Really enjoyed from start to finish

This book was one I was looking forward to as followed on Insta for a while and already knew parts of Andy’s life from podcasts. To listen this from start to finish really puts it all together. Not going to tell anything here but to go through so much and come out so positive he is a real credit to himself and his family. Thanks for this book.

The authenticity really jumps out

This book is an incredible journey - raw, gritty and at times difficult to hear. It offers a firsthand account of not only his desire to become a paratrooper but also the experiences that have shaped him into who he is today. The fact that Andy narrates the book himself adds an extra layer of authenticity, a direct line into his thoughts and feelings. A gripping tale of courage and bravery in hostile environments and the lasting impact these experiences have.

Real life experiences with an honest insight of the struggles that face our armed forces.

I take my hat off to Andy, to be able to share some of the most challenging experiences of his life and demonstrate that it’s ok to go through adversity. A real humbling glimpse into that world and the effects it’s has. If this book / audible helps just one person realise that they can overcome adversity of mental health it’s fine its job. I took a lot from it, a very addictive book which I would recommend to anyone. Thank you for your openness Andy & keep fighting the good fight 💪🏻
