About this listen
Steve Brown joined the army in 1993 as a troubled teenager and left as a respected sergeant-major in 2020. After passing the gruelling Parachute Regiment recruit process and selection for the elite Pathfinder Platoon he travelled the world, deployed on multiple operations, and pushed himself beyond breaking point, both physically and mentally. His story provides a unique insight into Britain's elite airborne forces, including their training, ethos, and indomitable mindset.
From desert to Arctic, jungle to delta, urban to rural, he's experienced some of the most hostile places on Earth. This autobiography covers the extreme highs and lows of a veteran's life with tales of humour, humility, hardship, and heroics.

Outstanding

Brown takes the listener in his own voice on his journey through the highs and lows of training, combat and the aftermath of his long career. He regales the listener with the funny antics and practical jokes young recruits indulge in while also describing just how brutally hard the physical requirements of training are.
I was hooked by his account, feeling the triumphs and tragedies with him.
I understood the way he felt about the laxity of civil life, feeling his annoyance at the apathy so prevalent in many today in their jobs.
His journey also deals with the issues many experience after leaving the military, and especially after come, bat. As much as society now claims to be sympathetic to the mental plight of many soldiers, there's still much to do on this front to help with the transition from military to civilian life and the latent trauma of combat.
Brown lays everything out, warts and all, in this memoir, so those who may be offended by crude or strong language will have a few shocks in the telling of this fascinating story.
A riveting and educational read, not just from a soldier's point of view, but from what it is to be human under the most difficult circumstances.

The reality of Steve’s journey, his treatment toward the end of his career and the turmoil that came later is a story that will strike a nerve with many and should enlighten others, issues of self-worth, depression and lacking identity are hard to align with the memory of the dude.
Much respect Steve - people need to share these thoughts and struggles so that others can accept that it is okay to share and to seek help when they are struggling.
