About this listen
Gold Winner for Best Drama Special at the 2018 New York Festivals® International Radio Awards.
Seventeenth-century England, and a plough uncovers a grisly skull in the furrows of a farmer's field. The skull disappears, but its malefic influence begins to work in insidious ways upon the nearby village of Hexbridge. First, the cows stop milking and the fruit turns rotten on the trees. Then, an insolent ungodliness takes hold of the local children, mysterious fur patches appear on limbs and people start disappearing....
Something evil is stirring in the woods. Something that is corrupting the village youth, who retreat to the woodland deeps to play their pernicious games. Hysteria spreads as it becomes clear that the devil has come to Hexbridge, to incarnate himself on earth. Can the villagers, led by the Squire Middleton (Mark Gatiss) and Reverend Fallowfield (Reece Shearsmith), prevent the devil gaining human form?
This digital audio exclusive stars Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith, alongside the original film's Angel Blake, Linda Hayden. Gatiss and Shearsmith are both huge fans of the original film, even recording a commentary for the DVD release.

"What marks out
Blood On Satan’s Claw as a truly credible piece of audio drama is the atmospheric yet unintrusive score by Edwin Sykes and the evocative sound design by Simon Robinson, which transplants you straight into this bucolic, sinister environment from the first crowing of birds as they wheel in the evening sky as something inhuman is unearthed by the farmer’s plough." (We Are Cult)
"The story is a rare example of diving headlong into the action done right. It spends little time establishing the status quo prior to its disruption, but instead gives a general impression of what it might have been prior to the supernatural horrors which stalk the land. While in many cases this could have been abrupt, the audio drama uses a strong cast and a building sense of dread to hook the listener very early on ... The excellent sound design and voice acting is really what helps to convey the story’s atmospheric strength, and the script knows when to let them take the heavy lifting when it comes to drama. Between this and the excellent sound effects, it manages to outshine its source material in moments of true terror ... It’s easily one of the best adaptations Audible Studios have made to date, and a must-buy for any fan of quintessentially English horror." (Starburst)
"If you're a fan of classic horror, then The League of Gentlemen's Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith have a treat in store for you." (Digital Spy)
"Heartily recommended for a long cold winter's night. 9/10." (Paul Simpson, SFB)

A good listen.
Atmospheric. Some bits were quite predictable. Overall a good piece of writing well performed by the cast.

Genuinely chilling supernatural drama
Going in to this, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew that with the involvement of Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith that I’d enjoy it. What I wasn’t expecting was a full-on period horror audio-movie. Everything about this production is pure gold, from the script and the performances to the amazing sound-design. Truly a delight for fans of British horror, and anyone who enjoys a really well-told scary story.
Very highly recommended!

Haunting, eerie stuff
✝️ I have not seen the film so came to this adaptation completely blind. Needless to say, this is a very compelling, very effective and very impressive audiobook. The story is in 20 minute slots which makes each segment with the gradually heightening stakes and mounting terror palatable. The acting is top notch with authentic accents, and the story uses dialogue to propel the narrative as opposed to a narrator. There are no narrator interruptions between each segment, so the story naturally flows as if you were watching a film.
Leaving the sign of the cross as I’m a religious type, but this is a cracking good and engaging audio production and I highly recommend this in time for Halloween along with Audible’s full casted Carmilla! Fans of the original film
will also appreciate Linda Hayden reprising her role as the mischievous yet sinister Angel Blake! ✝️

That was horrible
An extremely well performed well written play. Just right for Halloween. it reminded me of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ but more horrific I have to admit and evil well you’ll have to listen to find out what evil did.

Just, wow!
Being a fan of this particular story as well as the genre in general I couldn’t wait for this release. Brilliantly cast. Shame it wasn’t longer but it was a great version. I really love full cast productions with sound effects etc so did not disappoint. Be prepared to be totally submerged into this story

Outstanding adaptation of this ‘folk horror’ classic
Piers Haggards atmospheric story Blood on Satan’s Claw is given a new lease of life in this audio adaptation of his classic folk horror tale.
At least twice a year winter and summer I have visited the ruined church attic bottom where the action in the 1971 movie was set.
This drama perfectly captures the spirit of of the original movie.
My Mark Gatiss follow this with more in the same genre.
10/10 outstanding.
