The story

Evil stirs in Briardark, an ancient forest that looms over the Shyishan village of Felstein, where whispers abound of the spectres and brutes that lurk amongst the trees.

One man keeps these perils at bay—Samuel Helmgaart, the revered beasthunter of Felstein—but when tragedy strikes his family, an unknowable foe is unleashed, one that stalks the villagers and turns neighbour against neighbour.

Soon, a witch hunt ensues, and in the midst of his own sorrow Samuel’s daughter, Cicely, struggles with grief that has twisted into something dark. To save her, the beasthunter must track down the entity in the forest, and the evil that beckons to his daughter from beyond a most hostile grave.

interesting story overall pretty good were some bits where the voice acting just seemed to shift pitch/tone randomly but was okay.

seems to be an overarching theme mhurgast in these horror books interesting to see how it fleshes out.

Not your run of the mill horror story. Well written and well read. Not the story I was expecting from the description, which was a great suprise. I couldn't guess what would happen.

started slowly and was sluggish throughout. I didn't like it as not much happened. supposed to be horror but it doesn't tick the box. pacing quite poor.

C L Werner is one of my favourite Warhammer authors and has yet to disappoint. Briardark dose not leave you wanting. Excellent story as ever.

Yup you will hear this line quite often later on as the chapters progress. It's a bit funny the way the author says it but honestly the book was really good. I loved it.

C L Werner has provided us readers with another fantastic addition to the Mhurghast storyline, first established in Gothghul Hollow, as well as a fine addition to the overall range of Warhammer Horror. The story of a huntsman's goal of protecting his family and the village of Felstein against a rising, bestial evil is quickly uncovered to be something far, far darker. Something that will strike at the heart of his dwindling family and leave him a changed man. We see the return of a familiar face for you fans of Gothghul Hollow, as well as references and a deepening of the lore regarding that original novel and expanding the story of Mhurghast overall. I would highly recommend this book to fans of the Mhurghast storyline as well as Warhammer Horror fans across the board...

It didn't feel like a Warhammer novel, there were mentions of different things from the Warhammer universe but the ambience of the story felt off. Moreover, it wasn't exciting or scary. Mostly predictable after the first two or three chapters.

I tried my best to finish this book. I think the story was doing a pretty good job of depicting the slow burn, gothic horror of the gradual transformation into a monster and the shifting scales of morality in the face of survival. However, the performance eventually became too much to endure.

Don't get me wrong, the narrator does a good job of giving each character a distinct voice, I was never left in any doubt over who was speaking, but each word of the prose was massively over emphasised in what I can only describe as extreme earnestness. There were certainly times in the story that sort of delivery would have been appropriate, such as when wrestling with the moral implications of rationalising murder, but using the same delivery when walking down the street to meet a friend, is taking it too far.

Good story, shame about the performance.

I think this story could have taken better advantage of the setting and used a more stimulating pace. The story requires you to care about the characters but they are all a bit bland. There's probably an audience for this book, but it's not me..
