Summary
War. The word spreads throughout the Confederation...the long-expected Union invasion has come. The enemy is strong, their fleets larger and more powerful than intelligence reports had predicted. They have broken through the forward defenses, sent the Confederation's proud fleets into an ignominious retreat.
Captain Tyler Barron and the crew of the battleship Dauntless are light-years from the front lines, at Archellia, waiting for their damaged battleship to be repaired. Their ship is only just operational, but there is no time. The Confederation forces need every reinforcement they can get, and Barron and his survivors board their vessel...and rush to the battle lines.
When they get there, they encounter nothing but fleeing ships and shattered fleets. The Confederation is losing the war, falling back steadily, yielding system after system to the invaders. The Union fleets continue inexorably forward, seemingly immune to the supply constraints that have bogged down past invasions. Dauntless finds herself trapped, cut off from the rest of the fleet along with another Confed battleship and a trio of small escort vessels...deep behind the rapidly moving front lines.
Barron must make a choice. Pull back, try to find a way to get around the enemy, and rejoin the fleet. Or press on, strike deep behind the enemy advance, an almost suicidal thrust toward the Union's main logistical supply base...and the one way Tyler Barron can think of to buy the fleet the time it needs to regroup. To survive.

Another good One
Having inadvertently listened to this book before Book 1, I felt a little lost when I first started and, in some respects, the story was spoilt for me. That said, when I did get into it, it was every bit as good as Book 1 with lots of action and nail biting.
I am so glad they switched narrator to Mark Boyett as I felt he brought more feeling to the voices, especially Tyler Barron.
I look forward to the next instalment.

Excellent 2nd book.
Any additional comments?
An excellent continuation of the story.
I was a little nervous to see how the change in narrator would affect the story but in this case I prefer Kafer to Daniels for these books. However, neither really manage a French accent.
Going forward I would like a little less of how Stockton is an ace pilot etc, we get it. Don't mind reminding us once at the start, especially if you haven't read the first book but to have it repeated throughout gets a little wearing.
All in though a good book.

An epic story
The characters make the story in my opinion you can just feel their emotions and admire them as you would a living person

Entertaining listen
Honestly didn't know how to feel about the new voice actor. it was hard to keep track who's talking at some points in the story. By the end it got better, but I think I prefer Luke Daniels as a voice actor but I might be biased since I have docents of books narrated by him. all in all good story looking forward to book 3.

Continuing traditional waring SiFi.
Continuing in the tradition of great warlike SiFi this series remains true to form. i would love a little more tech definitions but this could be me. This story liking to others relies upon special efforts from particularly good Staff. and not so much different weaponry from different races of Aliens. Well narrated and cant wait for the next book. well done thank you.

Change of narrator killed it for me
The deadpan voice of the narrator makes it impossible to focus on the story, or to distinguish between which characters is speaking. The audio is clear, but it has zero voice acting. Sounds like a salesman reading the quarterly report to the board of investors, rather than an epic space battle for the survival of hundreds of worlds. Dropped the story and the series 2 hours into the second book. Its a shame, loved the first one.
