About this listen

DC Gary Goodhew is intelligent, intuitive, and the youngest detective at Cambridge's Parkside Station. He is the first on the scene when the body of a young woman is discovered on Midsummer Common and for the first time in his career is given the chance to work on a murder investigation.

Soon there is an identity for the victim: Lorna Spence. Richard Moran, her boyfriend and employer, has reported her missing and is distraught to discover that she has been killed. He claims she was loved by his staff and his sisters, reserved Alice and vulnerable Jackie. He says she had no enemies but it isn't long before Goodhew discovers plenty, including her high maintenance colleague Victoria and Goodhew's reckless former classmate Bryn. They both swear that they have nothing to do with Lorna's death but Goodhew knows someone is lying.

Then there is another brutal murder and Goodhew knows it is time to use his own initiative to flush out the killer, even though it means risking his job and discovering the truth about the one person he hopes will be innocent.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Jonathan Broadbent?

Possibly Sean Barrett or Robert Glenister, although their voices might be too mature for the part of Gary Goodhew.

I enjoyed listening to this book but while the narrator is competent, he is not outstanding. His characterisation is virtually non-existent, and at times I had to go back, or think hard, to figure out who was speaking in a conversation. It made the story a little difficult to follow at times, and made the characters a little bland. Still a good listen though.

Good story, but

It was an enjoyable listen, with credible characters, a likeable main character and an initially engaging story. Beware though, full concentration is demanded to have any hope of untangling this tale.
The narration is very good, only let down sometimes by the lack of a clear distinction between certain characters, particularly female, hence the requirement for your full attention.
I'm afraid that I did lose the plot towards the end, ploughing on without a clear understanding of the implications of various items of evidence, which thankfully were explained as the story reached its finale. Obviously this lessens the enjoyment somewhat though. Nonetheless, well worth a listen and I'm interested in listening to the next in the series.

Introducing D C Goodhew, an interesting character who plays by his own rules. His character needs developing, which I'm sure will happen in subsequent books.

I almost gave up on this book because the narration was so monotone. I’m glad I stuck with it because the characters developed well and the plot was clever. Even the narrator became less of a distraction as the book progressed

A challenge to get into but worth it

The characters are vivid in this complex murder case full of intrigue & twists. Set in beautiful Cambridge & superbly narrated by Jonathan it has held me for weeks.

It’s a good story .. performance ok... way too many different voices and points of view can become confusing... have to jump back at times to figure who is narrating, speaking or thinking ... not necessarily bad thing but very hard to follow at times... It’s like trying to follow and have a conversation or listen to inner monologue of four or more people at the same time it can be overwhelming to follow the story

For me, narrator is the important element of Audible book. A great story can be ruined by a poor narrator.

This book was a very good story and it was very well told. I like DC Goodhew and look forward to listening to his future cases.
